U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Massachusetts Senator John Kerry applauds as he takes the stage at a campaign rally at the Manchester Airport in Manchester, New Hampshire, January 20, 2004. Kerry was beginning a week of campaigning for the January 27 New Hampshire Democratic presidential primary election after winning the Iowa Caucus over rivals North Carolina Senator John Edwards and former Vermont Governor Howard Dean. Kerry's going to take New Hampshire

The latest Zogby poll (Jan. 18 through Jan. 20) of New Hampshire shows that John Kerry has safely bypassed retired Gen. Wesley Clark and is only 2 percentage points behind Howard Dean.

The poll gives Dean 25 percent, Kerry 23 percent and Clark 16 percent. North Carolina Sen. John Edwards and Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman are tied at fourth place with 7 percent each.

Now, I know that the Zogby polls in Iowa were way off -- the highest that Kerry got in an Iowa Zogby poll was 25 percent when he actually won Iowa by 38 percent. But Zogby was right about Kerry leading in Iowa, so I trust Zogby's assessment of New Hampshire, especially because New Hampshire's primary is a straight vote, not a complicated, convoluted caucus process that can be difficult to gauge.

The Dean and Clark teams must be demoralized. I can feel you, Deanians and Clarkians; for a long time I watched Kerry languish during this campaign, knowing that although he's the best candidate to take on the Bush-Cheney "re"-election ticket, no one else seemed to see that.

But they are seeing that now, and I ask you to consider giving Kerry your support when he wins the nomination. (If he wins New Hampshire, which seems likely, Kerry is going to be hard to beat for the Democratic presidential nomination after having won both of the first two contests. In fact, I am not aware of any candidate who won both Iowa and New Hampshire but did not get the nomination. Has that ever happened? Someone who knows please enlighten me.)

The goal always has been, and remains, removing George W. Bush from the White House, which he and his cronies stole from us in late 2000.

After Kerry wins the nomination, I hope that the other Democratic candidates' supporters keep their eye on the prize and join us in the Kerry camp. I'm an asshole, but your typical Kerry supporter is a very decent individual.
