Democratic presidential candidate Sen.John Kerry, D-Mass., announces he's selected John Edwards as his running mate during a campaign rally in downtown Pittsburgh, Tuesday, July 6, 2004. (AP Photo/Gene Puskar)

Democrat John Kerry has selected North Carolina Sen. John Edwards as his vice presidential running mate, Democratic Party sources said on July 6, 2004. Kerry, the presumptive Democratic nominee to face President Bush in November, will announce the selection later this morning at a rally in downtown Pittsburgh. An excellent choice and good timing: Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry is a solid candidate and will make a fine president, but North Carolina Sen. John Edwards is the rush that the Kerry campaign has needed. And Kerry made his announcement of his choice of running mate today just at a time when his campaign needed an injection of excitement. The fresh-faced, populist Edwards is a stark contrast to Dick Cheney, with his permasmirk and his Halliburton (a.k.a. the No. 1 reason that the Bush regime invaded Iraq). It will be almost as interesting to watch the energetic Edwards debate the crusty, corrupt Cheney as it will be to watch the intelligent, eloquent Kerry debate "President" Dumbfuck.
