Maybe TIME's next men of the year will be Tom DeLay and Texas prosecutor Ronnie Earle.

Descent into hell

Repugs cry 'Foul!' in Tricky Tom's downfall

as though the Lewinsky scandal never was

A brief tour of some wingblogs via Salon.com's Daou Report indicates that the wingbloggers all got the same Repugnican Party talking-points memo re the indictment of Tom DeLay. I'll sum up and destroy their "arguments":

Texas prosecutor Ronnie Earle, who is a Democrat, is "partisan" and/or is a "party hack." OK, for the sake of argument, let's suppose that that's true (I highly doubt that it is). What the fuck was prosecutor Kenneth Starr, the ringleader of the witch-hunt against Bill Clinton? (Starr originally was to investigate the Whitewater scandal; when that didn't pan out, Starr switched his attention to Monica Lewinksy. Remember the pornographic Starr Report?)

In Bill Clinton's impeachment over having (gasp!) lied about sex, the Repugs orchestrated one of -- if not the -- dirtiest, most politically motivated fiascos of all time. Now, when one of their own is accused not of something insignificant, like having lied about sex, but of something significant, like having laundered money, as DeLay essentially is accused of having done, they cry "Foul!" Fucking hypocrites.

DeLay will get his day in criminal court, at which time the evidence will exculpate him or damn him. Of course, if DeLay is found guilty, the Repugs will attack the court system; if DeLay is found not guilty, the Repugs will declare how wonderful the court system is. Because that's how they operate.

The Repugnican Party will be unfairly damaged by DeLay's indictment, even if he is found not guilty. Yeah, the Repugs should know all about that: Although Clinton was not removed from office -- an impeachment is like an indictment, and so although the Repugnican-controlled House impeached (in essence, indicted) Clinton, the Senate acted like a criminal court and, in essence, found Bill Clinton not guilty -- the impeachment forever tainted Clinton's reputation and harmed his party. Which was the Repugs' intent.

How does it feel, wingnuts? But, as I said, you had nothing significant on Clinton (you had lying about sex), while it looks like there's plenty on DeLay. (There's certainly plenty on George W. Bush, including treason [I'll lump election-stealing into the category of treason] and war crimes. Maybe he'll be impeached for these crimes after the Dems take over the House next year.)

DeLay having to fight the charges will make it difficult for the Repugs to ram their agenda through Congress. Oh, kinda like how having to deal with the Lewinksy scandal made it difficult for Clinton to achieve his agenda? Karma's a fucking bitch, ain't it, bitches?

The indictment doesn't show in explicit detail exactly how DeLay is guilty of conspiracy. I'm no lawyer (although I would have been a fucking fierce one), but my understanding is that an indictment doesn't have to spell out every fucking detail -- that's what the criminal trial is for. Duh.

Besides, let's face it: If DeLay is guilty, as he probably is, he did everything that he could to cover his tracks. I mean, that's what laundering money is all about: Covering one's tracks. Said tracks would be uncovered during the criminal trial.

Anyway, if DeLay is innocent, he has nothing to worry about. (Isn't that what the Repugs always like to say about the accused?)

The Democrats and the moonbats are just fucking loving this, and the Repugnican Party is in deep shit right now.* For once, wingnuts, you're right about something.

*They usually go into denial, but remarkably, the wingbloggers seem to recognize that the Repugnican Party is crashing and burning -- quickly -- before our very eyes, praise God.

Ding dong, DeLay is (politically) dead: Disgraced Repugnican Rep. Tom DeLay of Texas, pictured above in Washington, D.C., today, has stepped down as House majority leader because he was indicted on a FELONY conspiracy charge by a Texas grand jury. DeLay is accused of having conspired to funnel corporate money into Texas politicians' campaigns, in violation of Texas campaign finance law. The Associated Press calls DeLay's indictment "historic," noting: "A Senate historian, Donald Ritchie, said after researching the subject, 'There's never been a member of Congress in a leadership position who has been indicted.'"

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!

Tom "I Am Not a Crook" DeLay was indicted on a FELONY conspiracy charge by a Texas grand jury today and was thus forced to step down as House majority leader.

"Criminal conspiracy is a Texas felony punishable by six months to two years in a state jail and a fine of up to $10,000," notes The Associated Press.

Of course, DeLay claims that he's innocent and that he is being politically persecuted and prosecuted* -- because Bush Repugnicans take personal responsibility for their mistakes and for their wrongdoings so well.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're innocent and you're being persecuted. Whatever, Tommy Boy.

All's I know is that the U.S. House of Representatives -- control of which DeLay's shenanigans in Texas helped give the Repugnicans, ironically -- is going to the Democrats in November 2006.

Thank you thank you thank you, Tricky Tom!

*Reports The Associated Press:

Ronnie Earle, the Democratic prosecutor in Austin who led the investigation, denied politics was involved. "Our job is to prosecute abuses of power and to bring those abuses to the public," he said. He has noted previously that he has prosecuted many Democrats in the past.

...[T]he [Texas] grand jury's foreman, William Gibson, told The Associated Press that Earle didn't pressure members to indict DeLay. "Ronnie Earle didn't indict him. The grand jury indicted him," Gibson said in an interview at his home.

So I guess that a prosecutor can't go after a Repugnican if the prosecutor is a Democrat, or the prosecutor will be accused of being politically motivated. And of course a Repugnican prosecutor is unlikely to touch a fellow Repugnican.

So, apparently, Repugnicans should be allowed to commit whatever crimes they wish, with impunity.

So much for the integrity that Gee Dubya promised the Repugs would "restore" to D.C.

Here is the four-page indictment against DeLay and his accused co-conspirators, from findlaw.com:
