Voyageur

Well, what happened was that I stopped in at Fine Tunes, which is the BEST record store in all of CT.  I hadn't been there for probably two to three months, and that is a LONG time for paulapalooza to not go to Fine Tunes.   Proprietor and pal Larry was there and I started by asking about the future release of ColdPlay's live concert DVD and CD which will be released in about two weeks.  Then of course, I had to peruse the new releases and wouldn't you know there were just too many to choose one.

Here's what I ended up with:

BNL: see the review below.  Fun disc, and I purchased the CD/DVD set.

Enigma Voyageur.  Their first album inspired an entire three act experimental theatre event for my senior seminar at college, and this new one is not disappointing.  I enjoy the thematic feel of each album: the Gregorian chants; Native American music; Dolphins; Carmina Burana.  This one doesn't seem to have as strong of a theme, but I"ve only listened to it once.  I guess a full fledged review will follow once I've had the full aural experience.

Beth Gibbons Out of Season.  Ms Gibbons is the chanteuse of the millenium.  She's the coolest thing since ice and I'm not exaggerating here.  This solo effort by the vocalist for Portishead is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  full review to follow.

David Bowie & Warren Zevon: okay, okay, how the heck am I supposed to have listened to all of my new music already?  Hmmmm?  But I cannot wait to listen to these two albums and I just gotta say that they were both recommended by Larry so I'm sure I'll like them.

What can we learn from all of this?  Well, if you're suffering from financial hard times, always start with the used rack.  I found Bowie's new album for $8 and it was in PRISTINE condition.  Which of course allowed me to purchase the other four albums (I know -- no wonder I'm incurring financial stress).  Another lesson to learn is not to put off going to a music store for more than a month because the effects can be devastating.  There's still two or three more new releases that I"d like to try, especially Travis' newest and the new Jonny Lang.

Overwhelmingly, the lesson I'd like to teach everyone out there in cyber land is to find a music store that isn't a chain that has someone as cool as Larry behind the counter.  Larry knows our musical tastes and has NEVER made a bad recommendation for us.  There is no way to compare his knowledge and level of customer service with anyone.  There are music stores all over that have this to offer: find yourself one!
