WARNING:  SLOW BLOGGING CONTINUES…

Lots of little odds and ends but nothing coalescing into cogent writing material.  Part of the problem is recovery from last night’s posting frustration.  I had something together, but I couldn’t get it to post reliably; now that I’ve had time to think about the piece, I’ve yanked it.  Ugh.  Writer’s funk has descended upon me.  Hope this cloud clears soon.

In the mean time, I’m kicking around a few things, turning over a few stones to see what crawls out.

I’ve recommended Fathom before, cool on-line classes, some of them free.  The following class looks rather interesting, think I’ll check it out.  Would like to round out my understanding of the Middle East and the Israel/Palestine dilemma; this might help.  If you take this class, be sure to drop a comment and share your thoughts.

ISRAEL AND THE ARAB COALITION IN 1948 from Cambridge University Press

Author Avi Shlaim re-examines the traditional narrative about the birth of Israel and suggests that it is time to reassess the portrayal of Jews as victims of the Arab coalition. The seminar is free; simply follow the checkout process to enroll:  http://www.fathom.com/course/72810001/1337

Also looking into this free seminar, getting a better grip on the concept of sustainable development will be important both in terms of getting along with our global partners and in terms of recovery from current and past practices:

UNDERSTANDING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT from Cambridge University Press

Looks at the complex and contested issues that arise when economic growth is pitted against environmental protection. The seminar is free; simply follow the checkout process to enroll:

Re: Trent Lott’s big mouth

Being a person of mixed heritage, Lott’s comments at Thurmond’s hundredth birthday make my blood roil.

If you’re white, you’ll probably miss subtle things that are racist because they aren’t directed at you.  You don’t see them as insidiously sneaky toxins; they’re the cockroaches in the kitchen that you see fleetingly out of the corner of your eye, telling yourself you imagined them.  They disappear under your scrutiny, never make your radar because they don’t leave any wake or debris on your personal scope.  Like shopping with a friend of color versus shopping by yourself – when you are you more likely to be waited upon promptly?  Don’t kid yourself.  Snap out of it and watch more closely.  Racism is still very much alive and well in the U.S.

Stuff like Lott’s comments are the same kind of thing that gets swept under the rug, dismissed as passionate vituperative meant in the spirit of the moment by a well-meaning man.  But one who’s not likely to feel the sharp sting of racism may forget Lott is a seasoned politician who’s highly experienced at public speaking…and this was a fairly public event.  There is simply no excuse for his comments; Lott knows when he opens his mouth that people are listening and listen people did.

Too bad not enough people are calling him on it, particularly his constituents.

Open message to Ted Turner:

Dear Mr. Turner:

Sure, CNN.com might not be yours to control, but it’s still the baby you gave birth and breath.  So where has coverage on Venezuela been this past couple of weeks?  It’s haphazard at best, not in-depth by any stretch.  No reporting on 12/1, 12/2 or 12/8 -- ?

Or has your baby truly mutated away from your genetics?  I never knew you, Ted, to be one who was chary on free speech or pushed around by the government.

Sincerely,

~Rayne
