Once again, little blogging today.  The ‘rents have moved on to my sister’s house for a few days – I may be able to do a little more blogging over the weekend.

Mom’s developed a habit of peering over my shoulder to read the blogs; she won’t admit it, but she’s curious as hell about this stuff.  She’s not too bashful either to peek over to see what’s got me flailing away at the keyboard, either. (What’re you typing NOW?, she asks, like I’m supposed to be working on homework instead.)

In part, her curiousity is piqued by my occasional outbursts of laughter.  Paul Hinrich’s send-up on Trent Lott dang near made me wet my pants.  I had to explain it to Mom (“What’s so funny? WHAT’S SO FUNNY??”) – but she didn’t see the humor in it.  Hmmm…somehow that didn’t surprise me.

She also asks about Julie – what’s that girl cooking today, she asks.  I tell her, she nods, but she can’t understand what could be so funny about cooking.  I guess you have to be there, Mom…<guffaw>

The blog and topic that have generated the most conversation around here is Venezuela.  My folks tend to lean to the right on most topics, making them see the error in their ways can be a challenge.  Because of their preference for rightist news venues, they haven’t heard a thing about Venezuela.  I’ve shown them Miguel’s posts and pointed out how very little we’ve heard in the news both on television and on-line about the Venezuelan crisis.  The ‘rents are watching the price of gas closely now; when it rose a few cents mid-week, they said, ah-ha, must be the Venezuelan thing.

Maybe it’s a good thing – they see the potential in the internet and blogging for gap-filling when the press fails to do its job.

On the other hand, it could be a bad thing.  I’m worried my mom will want to start blogging – she’s an emergency room nurse, chock full of medical horror stories and icky, cutesy stories about her kids and grandkids.

Be afraid, be very afraid.
