DharmaSurfing:  Mixed bag out here in the heartland

My babysitter-friend is in a bit of a quandary.  Two of her daycare families are facing employment challenges.

The first mother received a 30-to-60 day advance notice of layoff; her job is related to operations of the local HeadStart program.  Since this state (like many others) is in financial straits, funding is being cut for HeadStart and similar programs.  The dominoes fall and so do the jobs.

The second mother had to drive two hours away yesterday to attend an urgent meeting, only to be told on arrival that she was fired, must turn in her computer and would not be receiving her last paycheck.  There’s more than meets the eye to this one, but it still is sucky, deserved or not.

A total of four kids attached to these single moms will be impacted.  40% of my sitter-friend’s income impacted.

And while jobs appear to be picking up a little around here, the chances that both of these women will find something in a week is slim and none.  They’re going to have to give up their slots at this daycare with a person who’s now been caring for their kids in a clean, safe environment for more than a year.  My sitter-friend is scrambling to call every person who called her recently checking for daycare openings; so far, everyone she’s been able to reach has already found places for their kids.

I’ve sent via my sitter-friend some job postings to each of the affected moms.  Hope these pan out, but it’s highly unlikely considering the amount of local competition for job openings.

Yup, job losses continue out here in the heartland.

It gets worse: my hubby had to announce an across-the-board paycut yesterday for his entire plant.  He elected to take a 7% cut while the rest of the staff got 5% cuts; he figures the 2% might help keep the two most junior people on staff (part-timers with puny wages) rather than have to cut one or the other this quarter.  Now he’s making what he made before he accepted the general manager’s job.  All the responsibility, all of the pain, little-to-no glory.

They say it’s always darkest before the dawn.  I’m beginning to wonder if the dawn will ever come.

Food for thought

It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

Character bashing a la Cindy Osborne

I cannot believe the incredible crap I am getting by email these days (and from whom -- I won't even say, I'm incredibly embarrased).  Check this out – does this look like more of the handiwork of the Republican Party?  Who the hell are Kenneth Felts and Cindy Osborne?  Amazing, there seems to be little information available on either of these people in Google.  You’ll find many people by the same names, but no one individual stands out as the author or the distributor.  There are others who are tracking down background on Osborne, coming up short and finding discrepancies in the information stated.  Knock yourself out, see what you can find.

Regardless of who actually wrote this: do they not remember that George W. Bush is an alcoholic with a DUI record, went AWOL from the service between 1972 – 1973?  Do they not recall that Bush’s father’s status as a Yale grad entitled GWB to entrance into Yale?  What of GWB’s college girlfriend’s abortion?  Have they forgotten the trail of dismal businesses that GWB managed?  Have they also forgotten a clear majority DID NOT vote for GWB?

Have they forgotten the secret meetings Cheney had during his tenure in office with energy companies, about which he refused to produce any documentation?  (Clinton was hammered by an independent counsel for this kind of stuff for years, at taxpayers’ expense.)  Have they forgotten that Cheney has a so-called blind trust containing stock in Halliburton – a company that has benefited from the military action in Afghanistan and now stands to benefit from the action in Iraq?

I note they did not include anything about Richard Perle here either, or his conflicts of interest.  Or that Donald Rumsfeld’s political connections may have questionably improved his chances at getting aspartame approved for use by the FDA, while he was CEO of manufacturer Searle.  (In fact, Osborne runs on ad nauseum about Condi Rice's business background, but not a peep on Rumsfeld's or Cheney's business background!!)

The only credential ANY OF US require to be able to criticize people who are paid by our tax dollars is that of U.S. CITIZENSHIP.  We have the right to free speech guaranteed to us by the U.S. Constitution.  I learned that in a public grade school here in the U.S.  No college required.  And I am certain any citizen can learn this same thing at the library.

What a crock of dung.  Watch out if you read this entire diatribe below, it’s groupthink at work!

UPDATE -- 3:30 PM ET --

A link to a published version of "Cindy Osborne's" article has been found; the offending e-mail has been removed, except for the header below.  A link has also been added above in first paragraph.
