Movies: The Four Feathers

As promised, post-viewing comments.

Pros:  Lovely cinematography; I can taste the grit of sand in my mouth.  Nice casting of eye candy (Heath Ledger), although typically Victorian lack of exposed flesh and lots of grime in light of the storyline.  Casting wasn’t bad, but Kate Hudson was a little too flat in this role – or was she coached to be coolly Victorian to the detriment of the character?

Cons:  Drags.  And drags.  Flip-flopping love story which isn’t convincing.  Racist treatment of indigenous peoples, but that’s typically Victorian.  Flip-flopping relationships with friends which weren’t convincing.  I couldn’t be persuaded to believe in these characters.

Bottom line:  Entertaining?  Yeah, but there’s far better films based on historic novels for the money (like Last of the Mohicans).

Next up:  Salaam Bombay -- then it will be a dry spell as I've got to wait a while for more movies to arrive.  At least with hubby out of town tonite I can enjoy Salaam Bombay without his snoring through most of it (he's prone to dozing off in non-action/non-comedy films).

Commonality?

After noting a rather odd entry in my referral log, I was curious enough to go snooping around to see if it was just a couple of us that had similar entries.  What do each of these blogs have in common, other than mystery referrers in their referral logs as of 1:00 pm EST?  (Listed by blog name and mystery referrers found)

filchyboy – undefined, Hidden-Referrer  (only at one of the two listings on the Rankings page)

Scott Rosenberg -- referrer blocked by AdSubtract, Hidden-Referrer, undefined, null

reverse cowgirl --  referrer blocked by AdSubtract, null, Not Your Business!, [unknown origin], Hidden-Referrer, bookmarks

Julie/Julia Project -- bookmarks, [unknown origin], Not Your Business!

Real Live Preacher -- bookmarks

radiofreeblogistan -- undefined

Monster Limo -- bookmarks, [unknown origin]

Hate Central – Hidden-Referrer

For Whom the Blog Tolls – Hidden-Referrer

I don’t see the common link(s), but that’s a very good thing.  If you do, please let me know.

What if…

After listening to that white slug Richard Perle this Sunday night on Frontline, along with rebuttal from William Perry, I really have to wonder.

What if…

-- the entirety of Iraq, as suggested in Salon today by Jalal Ghazi, was turned over to the U.S.;

-- the current beef against Syria is that they are not playing by the terms of the Saudi negotiated peace (remember that peace deal that the Saudis tried to broker shortly after the bombs fell and was quickly “whisked” off the table?  maybe the whisking was an illusion);

-- the pretext for this unilateral attack on Iraq was the lesser of two evils to the Saudis: given the choice of a nuclear war with Korea which would trash the entire global economy or the tail-wagging-dog theater of a veiled threat against Korea acted out in Iraq, the Saudis chose to give up Iraq?

It seems incredibly odd that the case of Iraq is a one-on-one unilateral situation while North is a regional multilateral situation.  It also seems incredibly odd that one nation with only the potential for nuclear weapons at some point in the future is a more pressing matter than one where not only are nuclear weapons in existence, but strike capability against U.S. interests is highly likely and the leader is mad as a March hare.

Should I be pleased that we didn’t expend more lives to make this threat?  Should I be pleased that not one Asian died to get a point across to Kim Jong-Il and the North Korean military – that the U.S. WILL attack them unilaterally, even if the U.S. talks only multilaterally?

Or should I be even more terrified that an already psychotically paranoid country feels more threatened than it did before, regardless of the method of threat delivery chosen?
