Movies: Truly, Madly, Deeply Just finished watching this one; my eyes are all red, my nose puffy and running. I’ve been bawling my eyes out. [Dave, you are not the only tear slut!] This one hurts so good. How do we take leave of our loved ones when they move on to the world beyond? How do we get on with living? How do we know when we’ve healed from loss? Do our loved ones ever come to help us? Would we know it, and if we did, is it a blessing or no? This isn’t a flashy, action-packed Ghost or sentimentally goofy Topper; it’s a quiet, subtle film which leads you down the path without thrusting its point in your face. Great recommendation, gang. Appreciate it, even if I am a horribly weepy mess after it. I don’t think I can re-watch this one with hubby. He’d be bawling too, and he wouldn’t appreciate doing it in front of me. Or I should say, he couldn’t go and have a good cry with anyone around. Go on, you know you want one. Get this one, enjoy it by yourself.
RantsCounterRants: Enduring Scorched Earth assault under way First, Enduring Freedom in Now, Enduring Scorched Earth at home. This can only mean one thing. The RNC has begun their efforts towards the 2004 Presidential Election, pushing for the re-election of Dubya. The campaign actually started back in February, when they sent poor Powell in front of the U.N. Security Council to try to sell a bogus bill of goods, to enlist a multilateral coalition to support the disarmament of Next, once the body bags coming home slowed down, they sent out another sacrificial lamb – well, sacrificial idiot, in this case. Knowing full well that Gingrich’s political career is toast, the Bushies use Gingrich as a mouthpiece to further twist the knife further in Powell’s back, making sure that Powell is down for the count. (You know damned well that “It’s not you, it’s me” message coming from the White House post-Gingrich rant is just window dressing for “the base”.) Now that Powell’s stick-a-fork-in-him-done, they’re free to move on to fresh meat. Senator John Kerry drew fire, with a Bush adviser saying “he looks French”. Mon Dieu! C'est incroyable! Ce n'est pas possible! “Kerry” n'est-il pas un nom irlandais? Les personnes irlandaises semblent-elles beaucoup différentes des français? Kerry’s wife has already been the subject of some less than charitable comments because of her Jewish heritage. What else will come out of the Scorched Earth bag of tricks? And who’s next under the blow torch of Enduring Scorched Earth? We should know by the end of the day. You can bet from here on out that the Bushies will light the torch at least once a day until the second week of November 2004. Here’s my guess: they will go after each target in order, ranked by threat to the reelection. Why Powell? Because in spite of being a good soldier, Powell’s an honest man who still finds ways to speak his mind. And quite possibly, given the record of some of the members of the Administration, Powell’s still just an uppity person of color who needs to be brought down a few pegs. They took care of the threat inside their camp, neutralizing him. Now they go after the perceived biggest threat outside of their camp. Who’s the next threat? Howard Dean? Wesley Clark? And does the order match the unofficial online poll conducted by Daily Kos? Is there another poll we should watch as a predictive tool for the next Enduring Scorched Earth strike? Put on your flame-proof chaps, your oven mitts, your welding apron, the blast shield; check your fire extinguishers and smoke alarms, and stand back. It’s going to get hot!
