A picture named BAMP3.GIFA picture named BAMP2.GIFA picture named BAMP1.GIFBuild-A-Meme Project:  SCRIPTING HELP NEEDED!!

See this cool little button at the left for Blogs By Women which fades from one to another image while also linking back to the Blogs By Women site?

I want one of those with three images fading in and out -- images above -- while linking to this new Build-A-Meme category.  I've been trying to cobble one of these buttons up, but I'm just not getting the hang of it.

Anybody have the skill and time to coach me by e-mail?  I'd greatly appreciate it!!

(This is what happens when one goes to business school and doesn't get a dual major in CIS!)

Build-A-Meme Project:  Get down to basics

Based on feedback in various comments and posts, backing up and getting down to basics, covering the elementals, is probably important early in this project.

First:  what the hell is a “meme” anyhow?

A meme is a piece of knowledge or information that is replicated repeatedly.  It’s an idea, concept, bit of understanding, anything which one human (or more) can pass on to others – and can or will be passed on again.

An effective meme almost appears to have a life of its own – I’ve likened it to an “urban legend”, one of those oddball stories we’ve all gotten by e-mail at some point.  See Dave Pollard’s posts this past week for more in-depth discussion of “subversive” stories and the effect of tipping points.

Second:  what are we trying to build?

The Democratic party is adrift (as are Greens, Libertarians, centrists and others not in the far-right); they can’t point to a single, clear set of objectives that they can get across to the public.

There is no compelling, central vision left of the Republicans – nothing that will sell the idea of voting for change, nothing that will persuade the disenfranchised to engage or return, nothing that will empower and invigorate the committed base.

That’s what we need to build – the vision, the meme that expresses the vision – and this space is dedicated to that end.  We need a meme that's as obvious and wide-spread as an "urban legend".

Third:  who’s on the project team?

Go for it.  You’re reading this and you've got something to add?  Knock yourself out.  Every person who’s impacted in any way by the U.S. Government is a stakeholder.  You are hereby empowered to

Did I miss another basic point?  Ask in comments.  I’ll update the post to accommodate your need.

And be sure to catch the rest of the bloggers who’ve been commenting and posting on this topic:

Kriselda at differentstrings (her post inspired this project)

Joel at Pax Nortona (his comment at differentstrings kicked this off)

Dave at How to Save the World (tons of usable knowledge and more fanning of the fire)

Rob at Emphasis Added (reminds us that Elvis has left the building and we’d better be looking)

Cowboy Kahlil at  ReachM High Cowboy Network Noose

Art Jacobson at Ojo Caliente

Natalie at Blaugustine

Promotheus 6

Very nice project team line up so far!  Will we see your name in comments, too?

WARNING: I.D.10.T. at the keyboard -- again

I'm trying to build some new navlinks at the left for my categories; bear with me, please, as I noodle around.

Obviously, I'm not a coder by trade; everything I've learned by the seat of the pants and at the School of Hardknocks (or handily lifted from our friends at Mandarin Design).

I've had navlinks before, but they weren't very snappy.  I'd like to get rid of this plain Jane template, too, but I'm not advanced enough to do that just yet.  It's coming, slowly.

Thanks for your patience!

RantsCounterRants:  BIG FRICKIN’ DUH!!!!

Omigod, do ya’ think?  Nah, can’t be true, is it?

U.S. says al-Qaida still poses threat

This article makes me wonder whether people outside the U.S. think Americans are idiots that can’t come up with 4 when adding 2 and 2 together.

The facts:

  • The underlying causes of hatred by Muslim fundamentalists against the U.S. still exist (anti-Zionism, anti-materialism, protest against oppression of Palestine targeting Israel’s largest supporter, rebellion against Christian fundamentalism and proselytizing, protest against American troops in Muslim nations, etc., etc.);
  • Osama bin Laden has not been found alive or dead.

Now add:

  • The number of American troops in Muslim lands has increased in past several months;
  • Israel continues its hostilities against Palestinians and only tepidly works on the Roadmap to Peace;
  • Hunger, thirst and diminished infrastructure continue to plague Afghanistan and are not under control in Iraq, while Palestinians continue to be grossly underemployed, impoverished and under siege;
  • Sleeper cells not only exist but to thrive around the world, fueled by increasing anti-American sentiment.

Terrorist attacks continue, and voila, U.S. counterterrorism officials pronounce that “al-Qaida is still a problem”.

Wow, I would never have guessed this in a million years!

Duh!!!
