Build-A-Meme Project: The Team at Work – update Wow, I can’t believe the stuff that just flows out of you people!
If I missed citing something, I’m very sorry, feel free to drop me an e-mail and let me know so I can capture it. Especially important to catch stuff on the Build-A-Meme Output page!! NOW…something for you in the way of homework. Scott Rosenberg brought this document to our attention at this blog today; it’s Dynamics of a Blogosphere Story, which summarizes studies of stories through their lifespan in the blogosphere, compared to mainstream media stories. The learnings are very important to understand; we will need to apply them effectively on this project, on this meme and sub-memes if we stand a chance of success. (Not bad information for use on a personal blog, either, I should point out.)
Build-A-Meme Project: A good defense is a swift counter-offensive Salon’s interview with Sidney Blumenthal yielded a particularly tasty morsel: But the Democrats' current leaders don't just fail at underlining their policy differences with Bush, they also fail in the trenches of political combat. I believe that no attack should go unanswered. You have to correct the record. There are two reasons for that: If you don't, people won't understand you, and two, if you don't fight for yourself, why should people believe that you'll fight for them? We must be able to develop responsive counter-attack memes as we go forward. Failing to launch effective counter-attacks – or at lease a highly-aggressive defense – may have cost Al Gore the votes he needed in 2000. GHOST IN THE MACHINE: Exorcism in Progress I have an unintentional post consisting of my chicken-scratched temporary Build-A-Meme header that I cannot remove. I've deleted the post hours ago; now I can see it on my site but I can't find any way to purge it since it's already deleted and the site's already been re-published. Gah! I hate it when applications take over control!! Bear with me, I hope it disappears soon. 8:13:30 PM
Build-A-Meme Project: The Team at Work Be sure to catch the following: Art Jacobson was hard at work yesterday at Ojo Caliente, crunching out meme themes; Luciana Bordallo Misura is working this meme beat in Portuguese for us on the international front; Mark Hoback whipped up a meme treat last night at Fried Green Al Qaedas; Rob Salkowitz has been tied up with work, but he still kicked in a contribution yesterday; Martin Wisse lays out three candidates themes for comparison yesterday at Progressive Gold; And Dave Pollard posted a subliminal graphic message on Tuesday (can you find it?). Good stuff, huh? A visual break I need a break, stayed up too late last night, have a lot to do today. I’m going to put this blog on the back burner until late this afternoon. In the mean time, here’s a little visual eye candy. “Pink snow” fell yesterday; high winds shook loose all the petals off the crab apple trees. A neighbor’s driveway is completely covered in fuschia, looking more like the fallout behind an Indian wedding. Since the ground was damp from light rain, the petals stuck firmly as they accumulated. Under the apple trees in the back yard, the ground looks as if someone dumped the paper punch. The sweet, sticky scent of the blooms now rises from the ground instead of flowing downward from the trees.

Build-A-Meme Project: Damn! Why didn’t I think of this?! Assuming you’re a Matrix freak like I am, did you catch the article in Salon today? If you didn’t AND you’re not a Matrix freak, here’s the last paragraph: “As I left the theater after watching the new film, I was handed a slick little flier. "Take the Red Pill," it said. "Join the Resistance." At first I thought it was a Christian tract, but it was Not in Our Name's clever attempt at a wake-up call for a very sleepy nation. Here are the truths the tract's authors offered: slaughtered Iraqis, Orwellian homeland security, deportations and military tribunals, endless war and repression. But they also saw a light at the end of the rabbit hole. "Another world is possible and we pledge to make it real," they said. "Join us." They listed some numbers, and I impulsively looked around for the nearest public phone, as if I were DAMN! That’s powerful stuff! Now there’s a good three or more meme themes right there! Gut appeal to the younger PoMo crowd, too, as well as the inherent rebel who’s likely not to vote. Break out of the Machine! Choice! Who’s in Control?! Yeah, that’s the ticket! This also brings up the point that other groups on the same team are all looking for the same item: the silver bullet, a meme that’ll catch fire. Some of them may simply have better, more effective memes now and as we go forward. Personally, I believe we should support whoever can muster critical mass to accomplish our ends. This may be “winning ugly” without compromise – knowing when to use someone else’s tool and suspending ego to do it. Can we commit to being this flexible? If a forest fire starts in earnest, is it best to try and put it out or let it run its course, particularly if the job at hand is to clean the forest? I think it’s efficient to stand back and let it blaze away. Your thoughts are encouraged and welcomed!
Build-A-Meme Project: Open Post for your Comments I’m copping from the DailyKos and leaving this post open just for your feedback. Art Jacobson had a great suggestion – perhaps all comments on the Build-A-Meme project go under a single entry each day. This one could be it for today; let’s try it and see what happens!
