Build-A-Meme Project: * * * URGENT – CALL YOUR SENATOR * * *

Following is an urgent email that I received today from MoveOn.org.  I’ve already called both of my senators as requested.

Please call you senators and let them know you support the impending vote for an independent commission to investigate the Bush Administration’s use of highly questionable intelligence in seeking approval to go to war in Iraq.

Thanks very much for your support.

Note: With the MoveOn petition now over 380,000 signers, the Senate has taken up our call for an independent commission to investigate. In the note below, Senators Jon Corzine (D-NJ) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) explain where things stand and how you can help TODAY. Congratulations for being part of an effort that's reached the nation's highest legislative body. -- Eli

Dear friends in MoveOn,

We're writing to thank you, and to ask for your help.

Three weeks ago, you began asking Congress to make the President tell the truth about his case for war. Since then, even more disturbing facts have come to light regarding the President's truthfulness. In the major media and around the country, we hear a growing concern that the Bush administration may have misled us in the rush to war.

We want to thank you for your willingness to take a stand on this issue in a climate in which taking a stand is sometimes labeled unpatriotic. You know as well as we do that true patriots do what's best for our country, and for the legacy we'll leave our children, not just for their political party. We're proud to tell you that the Democrats in the Senate have heard your concern: we're taking a stand too.

That's why we need your help. Very soon, probably today or tomorrow, the Senate will vote on whether to create an independent commission to investigate the President's possible deception. The vote will come in the form of an amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill, which is being debated now.

We'll need every last vote to win. Please take a moment right now to call your Senators and tell them how important it is that we get to the bottom of this with an independent investigatory commission.

You can reach your Senators at:

   Senator Carl Levin

   DC Phone: 202-224-6221

   Senator Debbie Stabenow

   DC Phone: 202-224-4822

Please report back when you've taken action at:

http://www.moveon.org/callmade3.html?id=1518-3069701-n5g_X0_j5LsnidTKEbr.DQ

With your support, Democrats are now coming together to demand answers. Yet President Bush and his officials are still showing that they're not willing to level with the American people.

Please call our colleagues in the Senate today, and ask them to push for a full, independent investigation of the President's claims on Iraq. By joining our efforts on Capitol Hill with your activism across America, we can make sure that the truth comes out.

Sincerely,

Senator Jon Corzine & Senator Debbie Stabenow

A Spooky Letter

Attn:    Ray Close, David MacMichael, Raymond McGovern

Steering Committee, Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity

Dear Sirs;

Wow, gutsy letter, as reprinted in Salon.com!  I liked it – it’s direct and pointed.  I commend your forthrightness and outspokenness.  The directness is very effective, considering the intended audience and its lack of ability to understand nuanced messages.

Unfortunately, while I give this an “A” for effort, sincerity and clarity, I’m extremely skeptical anybody’s home at the address to which you mailed your letter.

Yeah, you can see the lights are on.  There’s nobody home, though, hasn’t been since January 2001.  You can be certain that Mr. Cheney, slick operator that he is, has had his hand up the meat puppet’s backside and that any letter mailed to the meat puppet will not make it to its intended destination.  Certainly, any communication that asks for the Puppet Master’s head will never make it to the puppet.

Wish I could believe otherwise, but really…you’ve see Bush at work, tell me the evidence clearly indicates a sentient occupant at the mailing address.  (Okay, perhaps there’s an outside chance he’s sentient, but if he is, he’s seriously deluded and couldn’t make meaning out of your letter.)

I’d batten down the hatches and hope to ride it out until November 2004 if I were you.  Buck like crazy in the mean time if you get any more bullsh*t assignments with spin on them.  Oh yeah, please donate to or volunteer your services on behalf of the Democratic Party.  Thanks for your efforts on behalf of the American public.

Best of luck to you,

~Rayne

RantsCounterRants:  What else is there, still up in the air?

There’s been a lot of stuff hanging in the air unaddressed since the first bombs fell in Iraq.  It remained in the air even after Dubya did his obnoxious flight deck victory dance.

For instance:

·         What ever came of Gordon Thomas and his story on the Iraqi defector?  Was this guy and his story just a disinformation plant?  (Thomas' story is now highly suspect since it came out almost immediately before the SOTU!)  What of anything Thomas has written since – is any of that true or more disinformation?

·         Whatever became of the information that was provided to Baroness Emma Nicholson and subsequently given to Hans Blix?  More disinformation?  Or was it legitimate intelligence that was squelched?  (This story is now suspect, as it happened just before or the day of Powell's speech to the UN Security Council.)

·         What happened to that French suggestion supported by the Germans to increase inspection to a level of de facto occupation in Iraq?  Did the Americans squelch that, both diplomatically and in the U.S. media?  (Amazing there was little if any play in the U.S. press on Operation Mirage, as this suggested plan was entitled.)

·         What became of the thousands of pages of documentation that the U.S. reportedly yanked out of the 11,000+ pages submitted by Iraq in December 2002?  Did that documentation verify there were no WMD?

·         Why was aged, forged information about yellowcake purchases being used off and on again in U.S. documentation against Iraq, instead of the information reported by the U.N. inspectors?

·         Was there an active conspiracy to do whatever it took to make the case for war, including not only tweaked intelligence and disinformation, but smear campaigns against any parties actively seeking the truth, like the IAEA, Germany and France?

You’d think by now we’d have a few more answers and a lot fewer questions.  But then, you’d think we’d have a truthful Administration.

Worth the wait: Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the entirety of Queer Eye and the Fab 5 -- all two hours, two episodes, back-to-back.  They performed miracles on the two subjects I watched last night.  It was Trading Spaces combined with What to Wear with a teeny splash of Joan Rivers.

Speaking of Joan Rivers, omigod, that Carson is a scream!  He is so delightfully sassy!  I’ll bet he ends up with a gig of his own; I don’t give a hoot what the critics say about Carson and the rest of the gang making the public think all gays are “Jack” (of Will & Grace).  If anything, the spread of personalities amongst the Fab 5 should make it quite clear that being gay is a very diverse human experience.

I couldn’t help it, I stayed up and watched two full hours straight through.  I would have re-watched the first episode but my body finally collapsed from fatigue.  I couldn’t tear myself away, it was like watching a train wreck that never materialized.  Things could have gone soooo badly, and yet these five fairy godfathers pulled off miracles and save what could otherwise have been a disaster (or rescued what already was a disaster!).

Really, wouldn’t waxing a hairy bear of a man not go well for most of us if we tried to pull it off ourselves?  That could have been soooo bad!!!  I’d once seen Jimmy Kimmel wax Adam Corolla on The Man Show – it was not pretty and Adam definitely appeared more than a little pissed off at his beloved buddy.  I really expected similar results, especially from a man getting his ears waxed.  Yes, ears!!!

Is it that straight men will cave under to group pressure (more than one guy in the room while you’re getting waxed or otherwise made over) that made this more successful?  Or was it just that the subjects/victims were already highly compliant fellows?  Hmmm.  I also wonder just how many women have submitted their spouses or boyfriends as candidates for this program

My husband was awake during the entirety of the two hours I watched; he tried to make it look like he wasn’t watching, but I know he was.  One of the best parts of the program is the five tips given at the end of the program – one from each of the Fab 5.  I think the average straight man will benefit from them.  They’re short, snappy and will add a lot of impact in a short time to a straight man’s life for a minimal investment of effort (I’m willing to bet a few women could use them, too).  Hope my hubby caught most of the pointers while he feigned reading his woodworking magazines.

Except for the belt-buckle fashion tip – I don’t care how “in style” this is, I would never find a man attractive who had a buckle bigger than a dessert plate.  It was excessive in the 70’s and it’s still excessive now.  (Carson, dear, that thing you used as an example was bigger than your *ss.  Ix-nay on the elt-bay.)

Can’t wait for next Tuesday night!  I have to tape it!
