Harald (of the sleepy Salon blog Daihatsu Graceland) and I have been talking about watching a movie together.  We’ve got very similar tastes in movies – or at least he’s a lot closer to me in viewing choices than my spouse!  Of late, my spouse falls asleep during the middle of the films I choose; they’re too artsy or subtitled, contain too little gratuitous violence and sex, have no fast cars or action scenes.  What’s a girl to do with a penchant for movies that aren’t appealing to the average American Joe SixPack?

Ah.  That’s where Harald comes in.  He’s even suggested some of these movies that I’ve found so appealing and my spouse finds soporific.  Harald and I should be movie buddies.

There’s a little wrinkle in our plans, though.  Nope, it’s not that I’m contemplating watching a movie with a man who’s not my spouse.

Harald is in the Netherlands and I’m here in Michigan.  We’re not going to cough up the money for  international roundtrip airfare just to watch a movie together!  Instead we’re going to try and simul-watch a movie from right where we are.

I’m going to suggest for our first movie Vertical Ray of the Sun.  It’s by the same director as The Scent of Green Papaya, Tran Anh Hung.  Harald recommended Green Papaya to me; it was superb.
