Semantic web: WTF?

Semantic web blah-blah-blah syllogistic blah-blah-blah…

Look, I’m no idiot.  I can hold my own with some of the brightest.

But what the f*ck is the semantic web?  Right now it’s a meme eating away at conversation across some of the A-listers – and not much more.

Until you can explain it to my kids or your mother in 20 words or less, it means doodley-squat.  It simply won’t gather critical mass for either beneficial public awareness or appropriate developmental funding.  (Sure, Gates and Ellison get it, but do you really want ALL developmental funding to coming from a couple of large corporate interests?)

Some of the stuff being tossed about the blogosphere on this topic is more like a pissing match about Baudrillard, Derrida and post-modernism.

For crying out loud, even quantum mechanics can be explained with more clarity and greater brevity, without stooping to use descriptors like syllogism.

And without arguing the nature of syllogisms...

Another thank you note

Dear Mr. Soros:

Thank you very much for your extremely generous but much needed donations to progressive organizations like MoveOn.org and the Center for American Progress.   When a man as wealthy and worldly as yourself rejects the Bush Administration and its policies, something is badly amiss in this country; let’s hope that everyday folks across the lower percentiles of income here in the U.S. wake up and smell the coffee soon.

Maybe you could have a little chat with Warren Buffett and ask him to do the same?  I know he’s got your back on the inequities of the Bush tax cuts...

The flight from television

Did you give up some other activity to either read blogs or write one?  If you did, was television viewing among the casualties?

Why?

More on this topic at RFB.

(If you leave comments here on this topic, I’m going to repost them there for consideration by the broader audience that RFB reaches.)
