The Mighty Jimbo has finally gone and done it. He’s asked for and received a sabbatical. I’m envious. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t dream of changing my life, giving up kids and a mortgage and all the detritus of this stage of my life to be in Jimbo’s shoes. I’m wealthy beyond measure, surrounded by loved ones and choices and other opportunities to grow at this point in my life. But I’m wistful, nonetheless. To be traveling as light as Jimbo, unencumbered by worries about babysitters and after-school sports schedules, home maintenance and financial statements…to be off on an adventure, to a place I’ve dreamed of visiting. Ah. What a lovely fantasy. I wish Jimbo the best as he embarks; I hope he’ll find what he’s been seeking somewhere along the way. In the meantime I’ll have to make do with a koan. A young monk expressed to an older, wiser monk a desire to visit a certain holy mountain shrine off in the distance. He pointed to the mountain top as he talked about this wish with his superior. The older monk said, Look carefully at that mountain top. Concentrate on the location of that shrine. The young monk did so, looking intently at the snowy peak on the blue mass towards the edge of the horizon. For untold moments, he breathed slowly, staring unblinkingly at the crisp white coldness against the sky. The older monk waited patiently. Finally, breaking the silence, the older monk said, You are already there. ===== What about you? Are you wishing you were somewhere else? Indulge in that fantasy today. And fill me in. I’d like to be there, too.
