Or down at me, I should say. He was driving a great white GM Yukon, one of those enormous SUV’s of which he was so fond, a baseball cap set just so on his receding hairline. I nodded slightly, automatically. Then I swallowed hard, remembering as I turned the corner that he was dead five years this past summer. Funny, this: how do I tell my husband I saw his brother today? I pulled into the bank parking lot, empty at the early hour before formal business hours but after dropping off the kids at school. I got my pocket money for the weekend, looking over my shoulder as a car pulled into the lot. Looked okay; they were far enough away from my car and hadn’t yet disembarked the vehicle. I used the remote to unlock the door just in time, clicking then throwing the door open and gliding into the seat in one fell swinging motion, and then relocked the door. I checked the cash in my hand as I put it in my wallet, put the keys in the ignition and reached to buckle my belt. He caught my eye as I finished fastening the buckle. I tried to squelch the startle reflex. He glanced in my direction, and then looked away as he headed towards the ATM; I sensed he was looking in my direction from the corner of his eye. I turned the key quickly, putting the car in gear, backing out and racing out of the parking lot. Good Lord…what the hell was going on? Here was my friend that passed more than a year ago of a heart attack. What do I do if I see a third? Have you ever had one of those days where you see a person or people who look incredibly like someone who’s passed on? What about two or more in one day? What did you do?
