Art vs Copyright

A new exhibition in New York will attract attention to the tension between draconian copyright laws and freedom of expression. The exhibit, "illegal art", will feature collage, audio, film and many other expressions that in one way or another uses other people's work. With the new copyright laws, much of this will be illegal, as the big media corporations have lobbied lawmakers into eroding 'fair use.'

Fog of War

Scott Rosenberg writes that a number of authorities agree that the US is more likely to not end up in a real war with Iraq. What happens, he explains, is "an elaborate game of chicken to bend Saddam to our will, or force his peaceful ouster."

I tend to agree, but would like to remind that the US played a similar game of chicken with Milosovic.

Yahoo Gives Glimmer of Hope

After a long, miserable year on the world's stock exchanges, things may brighten a little, amid surprisingly good results from Yahoo.

One catalyst for the burst of the dot-com bubble was the total collapse of advertising prices. Yahoo is now reporting an increase also in advertising revenue.

...until the next bad piece of news sends the stocks tumbling again.

We didn't mean it, honest!

Street signs in Davie County, NC, are not specifically designed to welcome visitors. You could be excused for thinking street names like Staya Way, Getta Way, Keepa Way or Outatha Way mean what they say. The residents, however, insist they named the streets that way for 'fun' and not to discourage visitors.

Politics

Added my first story to this blog just now, a very rough outline of my political views.

And I purchased and registered Radio Userland today. I intend to remain in blogland. Smile

Literature Prize to Hungarian Author

The 2002 Nobel Prize for Literature went to the Jewish Hungarian writer and concentration camp survivor Imre Kertesz.

This year, the academy chose an author there is at least some chance people have heard about. Easy reading, however, it isn't. The Academy describes his writing with these words:

"The refusal to compromise in Kertész’s stance can be perceived clearly in his style, which is reminiscent of a thickset hawthorn hedge, dense and thorny for unsuspecting visitors."

The Acedemy's tastes are obviously not what you'd call mainstream. But, for the 7th time in 8 years, it is surely European.

Oh no, not another Britney

Miss America 2003, Erika Harold, is deeply religious and uses every opportunity to promote chastity and abstinence. The Miss World generals were not amused, but when they tried to make her talk about youth-violence prevention instead, the Christian newspapers in the US cried foul. Now she is apparently permitted to talk about sexual-abstinence education as part of this platform.

Good grief. I just hope she doesn't try to sing, too.
