French Court Affirms Freedom of Speech
"French writer Michel Houellebecq has been cleared of inciting racial hatred by saying Islam was 'the stupidest religion'." (BBC News)
Thanks to Paris for bringing this to my attention now.

Spam From Hell
I'm sure you're all ready to beat senseless anyone sending spam into your mailbox. What would you think if someone could send advertising that popped up suddenly on your screen, when you weren't even browsing the net? Homicidal? That's just the start of it! I am going to make it into my religion to wipe anyone doing that to me off the planet, with extreme prejudice. Read about it in Raven's blog.

Alleged Archeological Evidence of the Historical Jesus
A burial box allegdely from the 1st century AD has recently been discovered in Israel. It carries the inscription “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus.”
The scholar reporting about the find, Andre Lemaire, alleges it is “very probable” that the "Jesus" mentioned in the inscription really is Jesus of Nazareth. Lemaire dates it to A.D. 63, just three decades after the crucifixion, which would be the time when tradition dates the death of James, brother of Jesus.
My initial comment: Very, very convenient. A bit too convenient. If genuine, this will be the first serious piece of evidence that a man called Jesus actually lived and existed in the 1st century AD. That would surely be important. However, there has been a bit too much bent evidence in the history of Biblical archeology. I hope this artifact becomes subject to serious scientific analysis.

Wants Serious Look at UFOs
"Most people don't think that there is evidence because they haven't look for it. There's such a little green men mindset in this culture. It's hard to work your way through that." (CNN)
'Little green men mindset' I like that!

Time Salt Not Bitter
time the hours of longing of wishing of wanting what could have been should have been might have been but never really would be could be or should be salt the taste of tears your tears my tears bitter never not me
This is just weird, because I don't write poems. Ever. These words just popped into my mind when I tried to sleep in my bed. The weirdest part is that I felt cheery, in a great mood, at the time, and the poem looks near-suicidal. Oh well, there was no other way about it than to get up, sit down at my computer, write the words down and go back to sleep. And I slept very well.

Does the Soul or Spirit Really Exist?
Science deals with what can be observed, directly or indirectly. So in one sense, you could say that science is simply not providing any answers to the question about the existence of a soul or spirit component of a human being. That, of course, keeps science polite to religious ideas. [read more...]

When the Police is Silent, the Media Speculates
The apparently false speculation about two arrests in the Maryland sniper case highlights a problem: When real information is not available in sufficient amounts to fill all the airtime and newspaper columns there is a demand for in such a high profile case, the media simply invents its own stuff.
It is getting very old to interview every sniper expert, psychological profiler and tarot practician in the world. So bring in the wild speculations! If this continues, it may get worse.
