Turkey Prosecutor Seeks to Ban Election Favourite
Just 10 days before the election, the Turkish chief prosecutor seeks to ban the Justice and Development Party (AK), which according to opinion pools is a favourite to win the most seats in parliament.
The party has its roots in radical Islamic parties already banned, but denies having a religious agenda. The background for the proposed ban is that the founding leader, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has been banned from office for a speech 'inciting religiouis hatred.'
As BBC News observes: "Turkey is entering uncharted legal and political territory."
My take: A dilemma for democrats everywhere: what to do if you fear a party about to win an election will endanger democracy itself?
