Ten Best Singles of All Time?

Joy Division - We 'Love' it!The British New Musical Express (NME) has compiled a list of the 100 best singles of all time. It's not based on sales, but the subjective opinion of the NME staff.

The NME requires you to buy the magazine to get the whole list, but they printed the top ten on their site:

  • 1. Joy Division - 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'
  • 2. Nirvana - 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'
  • 3. The Sex Pistols - 'Anarchy In The UK'
  • 4. The Rolling Stones - 'Paint It, Black'
  • 5. David Bowie - ''Heroes''
  • 6. The Stone Roses - 'Fools Gold'
  • 7. The Smiths - 'This Charming Man'
  • 8. Oasis - 'Live Forever'
  • 9. Massive Attack - 'Unfinished Sympathy'
  • 10. The Clash - 'London Calling'

Joy Division (picture) on top? Some surprise there. Undeniably great music in that list, but I can't help feeling this is a very eclectic collection.

A number of new pictures from the upcoming Lord of the Rings movie "Two Towers" are available at theonering fan site.

The site seems to be experiencing a serious load of traffic right now, so patience may be a necessary virtue.

Iraq Accepts Security Council Resolution

Iraq reportedly will accept the demands of the resolution.

No surprise here, really. The whole game with the so-called parliament was rather confusing, but Saddam doesn't seem to have much choice. Now we'll see whether he abides with the resolution.

Need more space

There is no end to how many links I need on this page. Obviously, the list of navigator links on the left became too long for a screenful. So what did I do? Delete the space between them, of course! Now I have room for a few more.

That trick only works for so long, so sooner or later I will have to create my own theme for this blog to exploit all that wonderful, unused space on the right side.

Bin Laden 'Alive', experts say

A number of experts agree that the voice in the tape recording is really Bin Laden's, proving he was alive as late as last month.

The US State Department has now confirmed they are convinced that it is Bin Laden's voice on the tape. While still opening for a theorietical possibility that the tape may be spliced together or computer generated, it seems to point in the definite direction that the #1 enemy of the western world is alive and working.

Book-Burning Out, Book-Cutting In

An American fundamentalist group calling itself the Jesus Party are planning an Anti-Potter Conference at a hotel in Maine on Thursday, Ananova reports.

The group claims the popular book series for children promotes witchcraft, and the 'ceremony' will be concluded with a book cutting event.

Obviously the fundie group realised that a book burning event would lead to some bad associations.

The little switch in methodology doesn't prevent people from seeing the obvious parallells to e.g. the nazis and the inquisition.

'Bin Laden' Praises Recent Terror Attacks

Osama bin LadenThe Qatar-based Al-Jazeera television has aired what it claims to be a sound recording of Osama bin Laden, where he praises the anti-western terror attacks committed recently, including the bombing on Bali and the hostage taking in Moscow.

Thereby adding another piece to the 'dead or alive' puzzle. Considering the mention of recent events, this time we know the recording is not old. The only question remaining is whether it is the real voice of Bin Laden. Expect western intelligence agencies to have their voice analysis finding that out very soon. But will they tell the public the answer?
