Blair backs down on student top-up fees

Prime Minister Tony Blair appears to be backing down from a suggestion to increase revenue for Britain's universities by charging top-up fees from students. Yeserday thousands of students were in the streets protesting the move, which they fear will hamper recuritment from lower class families to higher education, and Blair has also faced opposition from his own ranks.

It is my strong opinion that the society at large benefits greatly from increased availability of education. Expensive education is one of the most important barrier to breaking down class barriers.

Sri Lanka war may be at an end

Map of Sri LankaSri Lanka's Sinhalese dominated government has reached an agreement with the Tamil Tiger rebels that may mean the end of 19 years of civil war that has cost more than 64,000 lives and devastated large parts of the country. The Tamils have given up the claim for full independence, settling for a high degree of autonomy.

The leaders on both sides are adamant that violence is no longer an option. They express hope for international help with restoring the war-torn island.

The technology has amazing benefits that file sharing is only one primitive part of, and when it is applied properly, P2P may turn computing upside down.

Anti-Americanism 'growing'

A US-based research center has studied the attitude towards the USA in 44 countries, and concluded there is an increase in anti-americanism.

It is not, however, a unified view. Many who expressed negative attitudes towards the US, also embraced American culture and technology.

To nobody's surprise, anti-americanism is most evident in Muslim societies.

Also take a look at Christopher Hitchen's commentary in Slate, on why the term 'anti-americanism' is meaningless.
