Equal time for Santa Claus
If you missed Rob of Emphasis Added making a comment to my "moon is green cheese" posting some time back, .you should check out his demand for equal time for the theory that xmas gifts have "an intelligent giver." That's right, Rob. The theory that Santa fills your stockings should have every bit as much credibility as those who want to credit parents and aunties who, I guess, can't always be considered intelligent givers.

Frist for the fray
Disgraced Trent Lott leaves room as Senate majority leader for Dr. Bill Frist of Tennessee, a workaholic surgeon turned senator who has experienced an amazing career in Washington. Judging by his voting record, Frist is one of the most conservative republicans.
Time will tell whether the hard working, filthy rich conservative is up to the challenge of handling a Senate where the republican majority hangs in the balance.

Is Saddam insane enough to want to fight?
The incomplete and disappointing weapons dossier handed in to the UN Security Council raises the question: does Saddam Hussein really plan to fight a war against the overwhelming forces set up against him? The Guardian/Observer's Ed Vulliamy gives a good overview of the situation.

Kazaa plays it cool
The entertainment giants and their legal guns have set their sights on the file swapping software Kazaa, but this will be more difficult than shutting down Napster. Kazaa was written by Estonian programmers for a Dutch company, and then sold to a company on the pacific island Tuvalu, whose executives work in Australia. Filing suit in business-friendly California has done the entertainment sharks little good, as an Estonian court rebuffed the American judge's order for the programmers to talk to it. Meanwhile, a Dutch court has ruled that local distributors are not responsible for copyright infringment done by its customers.

Fresh at the stands
A new issue of Virtual Occoquan is just out, with some of the best of last week in Salon blogs. For reasons I don't want to think about, Mark chose the item Penis a la carte from Secular Blasphemy for the xmas edition of VO.
Don't miss this, folks!

French get involved in Ivory Coast
French troops, sent into the war-ridden Ivory Coast to protect the cease-fire and foreign nationals, is one step closer to being involved in the civil war. A group of rebels, apparently pursuing government troops, encountered a French Foreign Legion group and they exchanged fire. The French had no casualties, and the number of rebel casualties are so far unknown. Both accuse the other side of firing the first shots.
The French intervention in The Ivory Coast has the support of the UN Security Council, which has condemned the rebel attacks.
While 'finesse' is a French word, it is generally considered unknown in the French foreign legion. The rebels are extremely unwise in engaging the French forces, but then again, France in unlikely to really want to get involved in this messy civil war.
