Xmas sales best ever, but lower increase

"The business press pegged the 2002 holiday shopping season the "worst in 30 years" not because sales declined, but because sales increased by a smaller-than-expected percentage." (Slate)

Art Quote of the Week

"There are people who dress up in doublet and hose and play the lute who have a more progressive musical attitude than your average superstar DJ." (Alexis Petridis laments the state of dance music in 2002)

I didn't pick it, The Guardian Arts did. I just had to bring it on. And yes, you should read the whole piece. It's hardly original to lament the state of the music industry, but I think the charts music of 2002 can hardly be lamented enough.

North Korea on path of provocation

Just after North Korea asked IAEA monitors to leave the country and took steps to rush forward with its nuclear programme, UN observers say North Korea has brought light machine guns into the Demilitarised Zone, in violation of the Korean war armstice agreement.

It's hard to know what the leaders of the closed, impoverished Stalinist country are thinking. These days, they are doing everything short of open warfare to provoke the United States. It's hard to interpret this as anything but an escalation to force some sort of concessions from the west. About what remains to be seen, but it surely isn't good news for peace.

Opposition win likely in Kenya

The Kenyan people are electing the successor of longtime President Daniel Arap Moi, and opinion polls suggest a lead to the opposition candidate Mwai Kibaki over Moi's handpicked man Uhuru Kenyatta of the ruling Kanu party.

The election has been mostly peaceful, with some irregularities reported, especially regarding incomplete electoral rolls.

The results will not be due before Sunday or Monday.
