Nightmares of a white new year

This, to my dismay, is Bergen right now. In a very short time, I will have to walk across that white, wet stuff in formal wear, carrying enough alcoholic beverages to sustain a good, long new year eve's party. Wish me luck!

Forget new years resolutions
A lot of people will want to quit smoking, and start dieting to lose weight on January 1st. Almost everybody will fail.
One word: Dieting doesn't work. Period. Losing weight during a diet is an illusion and will do far more bad than good. If you need to lose weight, you need to change your lifestyle. Nothing else ever worked. Here is a recommended site: Fatwars. K it looks like they too sell a diet. I guess they do in a way. But check out the FAQ. This is not something you start on and then finish and go back to living as you did.

Happy new year!
It's December 31st with a wide margin, so I want to wish all bloggers and readers a very happy 2003, and hope you all have a fun & crazy new year's party.
I sure hope 2003 is better than this year was.

New Norwegian
I worried that somebody would pick this up, sooner or later, and now BBC News has. I have written about the problem earlier: for some arcane political and historical reasons, we have two written versions of the same language in this small country. 4.5 million people, and we harass each other with two languages just different enough to frustrate everybody. All public documents and forms must exist in both versions, and the topic is more politically inflammable than gun control is in the US. The minority language "nynorsk" (new norwegian) is mostly rural, so any conflict over this topic becomes an urban vs rural conflict. As everybody knows, people on the countryside are not really sane. Who'd live in a place with no pubs anyway?
Microsoft has learned the hard way that taking a stand against lunatics is dangerous. Chosing not to translate Office into the minority language "new norwegian," there are after all only 400,000 users in the whole world, riled some of the fanatics up big time. The fanatics have now bullied Microsoft into issuing office in a New Norwegian edition, which of course hardly anybody will use. If the US Justice Dept or any others of Microsoft's enemies employed some of these barn latin mumbling fanatics, they'd bring Bill Gates to his knees in no time.
