Cat lover turns the tables on cat-chasing dogs

When dogs catch the scent of Jaroslav Kana's cat, they are in for a surprise as they run up to chase him away. His "cat" Leon is a full grown lion, which he takes for a walk twice a day in the town of Holedec na Lounsku in the Czech Republic. Jaroslav claims his pet, which he bought as a cub, is perfectly tame, and he even ties Leon up outside the supermarket when he goes shopping. Suprisingly, there is no law against having a pet lion in the Czech Republic.

Shift in US-UK attacks in no-fly zone

US and British air stikes in the Iraqi no-fly-zones are being stepped up, in what is interpreted as preparation for war. The planes have consistently targeted air defenses that has been a danger to patrol planes, but now they also attack surface-to-surface missiles.

"Human shields" running home as the going gets tough

Almost all the British peace activists who went to Iraq to become "human shields" are on their way home after realising that this can actually be dangerous (d'oh!).

The British anti-war protestors arrived with great fanfare in London-style double-decker buses two weeks ago. The return of 9 of the 11 activists happened rather more quietly.

The peace activists decided to return after Abdul Hashimi, the head of the "Friendship, Peace and Solidarity organization" that officially hosts the "human shields", gave them a list of possible targets and an ultimatum to either become humand shields for real, or leave Iraq.

Some "shields" had asked to be placed at places like hositals and schools. However, Iraqi officials pointed out that there is no point in being at places that will not be targeted for bombings at any rate. Instead, they were placed at oil refineries, power plants and water-purification sites selected by the Iraqi government. Some of these sites were close to military targets.

The new area code of the Beast

A few months ago, news sources reported about the Kentucky Mountain Bible College, who had complained about their phone number area code being 666. This number is given in the Book of Revelation as "the number of the beast", and generally associated with the Antichrist and Satan in Christian mythology. For some reason, the Bible College were uneasy about printing "666" on their letterheads.

Now, months after complaining, the College finally gets a new number.

Some people just have no sense of humour.

— Saddam should go

Two other Gulf states, Kuwait and Bahrain, supported the Emirate's urging Saddam Hussein to go into exile to avert war.  Kuwait is a close ally of the United States after the liberation in 1991, and both Kuwait and Bahrain hosts American bases.

What is "appropriate pressure"?

Khalid Shaikh Mohammed pictured shortly after his captureUS officials say that "all appropriate pressure" is being put on Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the al Qaeda official who's suspected of being the key planner behind virtually every terror attack the network has commited, to make him reveal future terror targets.

Which of course begs the question: what is appropriate pressure? According to most sources, Mohammed has been handed over from Pakistan to teh CIA, but he's not being brought to the US, but to one of the famous "undisclosed" locations, to be interrogated.

Rep. Porter Goss (R) said torture is "not permissible", but there are other ways to obtain information from him. He had to say that, didn't he? And if violating a ruthless terrorist's human rights can save hundreds or thousands of lives, who will ask difficult questions? I doubt CIA interrogators will take a serious time pondering this moral dilemma before they do what they feel is necessary. What do the Israelis call it? Ah, "moderate physical pressure." Sleep depriviation, uncomfortable positions, general bullying. A few weeks of that, and Mohammed will probably sing like a bird.

Judging by the released picture, taken shortly after hias capture, the 'sleep depriviation" part of the torture has already started.

Delegations

I have a big problem understanding how the Daypop Burst feature works. Now it has picked out the word "delegations" from my piece about the alleged NSA memo. Weird.

Not that I mind the extra traffic.
