Study: Men just as worried about their bodies as women
A new survey is claiming that men are just as worried about their bodies and their weight as women. For example, more men worry about growing a beer belly than about losing their jobs. Three forths of men were not comfortable at the thought of stripping off at the beach.
As many as 43% of men are trying to lose weight, and 73% join a gym for this purpose. Alas, close to half of them never use the gym membership.
Steve King at Men's Health complained:
"Women have a great deal to blame for men's insecurities. They want us to be 'Mr Sensitive' then move the goalposts and also want us to have a cracking body as well."
I agree. Look good or being sensitive should be enough. They can't have both.

Would you like to see an 18-cent coin?
"Here's your change, sir. One ¢32, one ¢18 and one ¢2 coin."
Sounds familiar? Not? Well, something like this could be reality if mathematician Jeffrey Shallit's advice is followed by central banks around the world.
If the objective is minimising the number of coins (and we all hate being weighed down by all those coins after a night on the town, right?), then the common system of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 is not the optimal way to split a $, £ or € into 100s.
Of course, being a mathematician, he probably doesn't have the problems us mere mortals would experience from counting by 32, 29 or 18.

About journalists
'It's a chronically demoralised institution. Reporters are by nature misanthropic and negative but it's never been as a bad as this.' (Disillusioned New York Times reporter in The Observer)
I hope bloggers get a better reputation.

Catalogue of lunacy
Forgetting the compulsory in-flight reading material can lead to the weirdest things, for example that the bored journalist starts reading the shopping catalogue.
How else could you explain the selection of merchandise? Who in his right mind would order the Messaging Cap?
This garment has a liquid crystal display in the front panel. Up to 10 messages can be programmed to scroll by such as "Go team, score again" or "To be or not to be, that is the question".
If that ultimate in headgear lacks appeal, what about the Insect Vacuum "that lets you capture and dispose of insects at a comfortable distance without ever having to touch them"?
And I've not even mentioned the presents for the pet.

Posession law in Ontario 'erased'
A Windsor judge has quashed a judgment for marijuana posession, effectively erasing Ontario's laws against possessing less than 30 grams. This adds to the confusion over the legal status of cannabis in Canada. The ruling means the police can no longer arrest people for simple possession, as there is currently no law against it.

Bomb blast in Israel
The Palestinian extremists had their say on the peace talks between Abu Mazen and Ariel Sharon by killing at least seven and injuring about 20 when they blew up a bus in Jerusalem. The carnage was caused by one of two suicide bombers disguised as religious Jews.
The message was, I guess, Abu Mazen can't stop the militants even if he wants to.

US Army seized Iraqi TV station that broadcast al-Jazeera
When the US Army commander for Mosul ordered the troops to seize the television station because it occasionally broadcast al-Jazeera, Maj. Charmaine Means, the head of the Army public-affairs office, protested. When she was given a direct order, she refused it and was relieved of her command.
She argued that the presence of armed soldiers would intimidate the station's Arab employees into airing only programming produced by, or acceptable to, the American military.
This story will no doubt will lead to questioning of the US troops' dedication to freedom of press in post-war Iraq. On the other hand, allowing the press to incite protests and even violence against the coaltion occupants could lead to a much more dangerous situation on the ground.
I picked this off Kuro5hin. It's not exactly been prominently reported in the press.

The scheme did not work.

Press power to the people
South Korea's most progressive and arguably most influental news source, Oh My News, is a corraborative news site where every citizen can be a journalist. And they'll even pay for the newsitems. Think Kuro5hin, throw out all the nerds and add real people, and increase it manyfold.
