Erection saves life

His prolonged erection no doubt saved the life of 44-year old Mihai Tancau from Bacau, Romania. After an car accident, he was treated for concussion and several fractures. The doctors then started to wonder why his erection would not go down. In fact, it was caused by a damaged spinal cord that would otherwise be missed.

And not the nurses, apparently.

The colour of shock

A group of researchers have found a way to quickly and efficiently shift frequencies of light by sending shock waves through photonic crystals. If this technique can be perfected, it has very promising applications in fiber communications and in medicine.

And in discotheques, of course.

Payday in Baghdad

About 6,000 electricity workers are the first Iraqi state employees getting paid after the war. Jay Garner promises that all state workers will be paid by June 3rd.

The employees are paid in 10,000 dinar notes bearing the image of Saddam Hussein.

US 3rd infantry blamed for Baghdad mess

British forces are growing less patient with the mess battle-weary US troops are making of Baghdad, which are far behind the rest of the country in reconstruction and normalisation.

The finger of blame is being pointed at troops from the 3rd Infantry Division, the main US forces in Baghdad, who are said to be desperate to return home after bearing the brunt of the military campaign.

In Basra and other cities, British and (other) US troops are mingling with the local population to easen tension and build confidence.

Now, as the US is replacing the 3rd infantry with the 4th armoured division, after replacing Jay Garner ("widely seen as a disaster") with Paul Bremer, hopes are up that Baghdad could improve along with the rest of the country.

Amid the difficulties, Mr Sawers said that people should not lose sight of the "overwhelming sense of relief" in Iraq that Saddam Hussein has gone. But he added that he had no idea about the leader's fate.

"People would like to see his head on a stick to make sure he has gone. He is going to be like Elvis for a long time with rumours about his continued existence."

However, electrictity, water and food should now take precendence over putting Saddam Hussein's head on a pole.

I like that headline

"Uber-Soldier Needs Much Debugging" (Wired)

Before attempting to make soldiers bullet-proof with nano-technology, scientists are facing the challenge of making them water-proof.

Negotiate about what?

Andrew Bolt says it like it is about Islamic terrorists and a particular group of western 'intellectuals' who want to blame the terror attacks on the west itself:

It says something of the intellectual poverty of so many of our universities' "experts" in the Middle East and Islam that few have better explained the nature of today's Islamic terrorism than did the half-educated mass murderer of Bali, Amrozi, last weekend.

Speaking to reporters at police headquarters at Denpasar, the Bali bomber gleefully promised "there will be more bombs until the Westerners are finished".

As for his 89 Australian victims: "I don't feel sorry.

"They are brutal.

"They come here, people such as Americans, the Jews and their allies.

"They want to colonise, not just to play. They want to colonise Muslim people. They make our people weak and they take them to bars."

So forget the experts who told us the Bali bombing was caused by Israel's occupation of Palestinian land. Or by our invasion of Afghanistan. Or by Western support for Arab dictators. Or whatever -- because Islamic terrorism has been like a Rorschach blot of the Left: into every suicide bombing you can read your favourite cause, and demand your favourite solution, whether it is winding back American influence, curbing globalisation or destroying Israel.

When Amrozi himself explains he just wants Westerners "finished" for something as trivial as drinking in a bar on a Hindu island, or for being Jewish, then it's time to stop negotiating and start shooting.

Exactly. We have nothing to negotiate about with Islamic terrorists. Sadly, many commentators on the left have just revealed their extreme intellectual shallowness and self-loating without contributing any insight on the problem.

Anti-mugging suit

The no-contact jacket, looking like a normal women's coat, is really a dangerous weapon. It can ward off potential assailants (or, really, anyone the wearer doesn't like) with an 80,000 volt electric shock. That should teach'em.

Another honest opinion about Bush

Jan O. Karlsson, Sweden's Minister for Migration, referred to US president Bush as "that fucking Texas geezer" in a meeting with the press.

Prime Minister Göran Persson is less than amused, but leaves open the possibility that Karlsson can keep his job if he can "sort this out."

No comment yet from that Texas geezer.
