You googled me

It did take my attention that somebody googled for Oddballs, Jesus, and Me. The person ended up in my article about the historicity (or lack thereof) of Jesus, which I guess is as close as you get.

New U2 album driven by Edge's rage

The world's greatest rock group U2 has announced a new album, that will be "a monster, a dragon" of aggressive rock.

Bono said: "It's filled with big tunes and it's driven by a guitar player who is sick of the sight of me shaking hands with dodgy politicians. The anger is unbelievable."

Bono still knows how to grab headlines with his statements. Whatever the case, it is my strong opinion that U2 has made no bad albums, and I eagerly expect the next one.

This is the real thing!

I don't think there is any argument that this "Fucking USA" movie clip meets any reasonable definition of Anti-Americanism.

Prophecy

"THE political career of Arnold Schwarzengger was predicted in a 1993 movie, "Demolition Man," in which Sylvester Stallone plays an ex-cop put in a 36-year deep freeze for manslaughter. Touring Los Angeles of the future with a cop played by Sandra Bullock, Sly says: "Hold it! The Schwarzenegger Library?" Sandra: "Yes, the Schwarzenegger Presidential Library. Wasn't he an actor?" Sly: "Stop! He was the president?" Sandra: "Yes. Even though he was not born in this country, his popularity at the time caused the 61st Amendment." The audience laughed in 1993, but no one's laughing now. " (New York Post)

There has been an amusing tit-for-tat between Stallone and Schwarzenegger in their movies. Last Action Hero has Sly starring in an alternative reality's Terminator, and in Twins, Arnold laughs at a Rambo poster while flexing his own muscles.

Jump, they said

A sad, fascinating, scary and well written article from the New Yorker about the Golden Gate bridge and the people who jump from it.

Suicide is common and devastating, and very taboo in our society. I was touched by the note left in the apartment of one of the leapers:

‘I’m going to walk to the bridge. If one person smiles at me on the way, I will not jump.’

He never returned.

Smile to somebody today.

Press shift, go to jail

When computer science student John "Alex" Halderman published an article explaining how to circumvent SunnComm Technologies' MediaMax CD-3 CD protection software (hold down shift key while inserting CD!), SunnComm's stock value fell 25%. The company then threatened to sue the student under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act(DMCA), which prohibits circumventing copy protection. The bad publicity made the company withdraw its threats, but the law as it stands makes such a suit possible.

However, it is obvious that a law that makes it a crime to tell people to press the shift key is untenable. What is next? Sue keyboard manufacturers?

The US gives in to North Korea

The Bush administration has decided to offer North Korea security guarantees in exchange for the country to end its nuclear programme. Until now, the US has refused to give such guarantees, demanded for NK to end its nuclear ambitions, saying it will not reward blackmail. It is hard to see this as anything but a total reversal.
