Dean down, Kerry up
Ok, word of the blogsphere is that Dean is falling in the polls, he is yesterday's news, and he is disliked by the press. So who is hot now? John Kerry is. A much discussed Zegby poll has John Kerry leading Iowa with 24% of the vote, Dean and Gephardt sharing the runner-up at 19% and Edwards is up to 17%.
At the same time, Clark, who has skipped Iowa has cut down Dean's lead in New Hampshire to 28% against his own 23% and with Kerry third at 16%. This according to an ARG poll.
And just a few days back, most people were willing to hand the nomination to Howard Dean already.
As CalPundit says, this is turning into a very thrilling ride. Talking Points Memo is excited, too.
David Hogberg at Cornfield, blogging from Iowa (but the other side politically, apparently) has an explanation for Dean slipping: now the potential voters have met Dean, and he doesn't connect well with working class people. Via Dean's World (no, not that Dean).
Oh, and you should not miss Mickey Kaus' comments, also explaining why polls are very unreliable when only about 6% is likely to vote in the primary, and questioning Zogby's methodology. Still... it is interesting.
I actually think Bush will fear Kerry more than he fears Dean. But of course we haven't seen how well Kerry handles the situation when he is the frontrunner, and has everybody aiming at him. And there is that question about money. Campaign contrubution law ironically doesn't allow his filthy rich wife Teresa Heinz Kerry to contribute $millions to her husband's campaign, as the couple has a prenum on her half-$billion fortune.

No hard feelings, maybe
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has often been derided by right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh. Somewhat surprising, therefore, ACLU has filed an amicus curiae on behalf of Limbaugh to a Florida district court, claiming that investigators violated his civil rights by seizing his medical records to find out if he went "doctor-shopping" to support his drug addiction.

Sicaf
Oh you just have to take a look at this performance/art movie. It is absolutely massively cool. Windows Media, uses sound, pretty work safe.
Bonus: Some nice pictures here. These are pictures people normally claim are Photoshopped. The famous Dolphin/surfer picture by Kurt Jones, for one, is not. And it's not a shark.

Less spam in Hotmail
Well, there is no doubt that Hotmail's spam filters have begun working. Over the last month or so there has been a dramatic drop in spam to my Hotmail inbox, from about 50 a day at worst (when I seriously considered forgetting it) down to around one a day right now.
It appears some spammers are fighting back and trying to beat the filters, though. If there is a hell, I hope they make an extra hot hole for spammers (next to the phone salesmen and RIAA executives).
Maybe some of that anti-spam legaislation has had an effect, too? Nah.

Do you always dare to speak your opinion?
Paul Graham's excellent article What you can't say is very much in line with the title of this blog.
You remember how we dressed in the 80s? Seen pictures from the 70s? Ouch, right? Yet, people at the time, including those of us who lived then, mostly thought the fashion of the day was what really looked good.
What scares me is that there are moral fashions too. They're just as arbitrary, and just as invisible to most people. But they're much more dangerous. Fashion is mistaken for good design; moral fashion is mistaken for good. Dressing oddly gets you laughed at. Violating moral fashions can get you fired, ostracized, imprisoned, or even killed.
You shouldn't miss this article. Kudos to Bjørn Stærk.

To Mars with love
Daryl Cagle, who runs the Pro Cartoonists Index, calls it a "Yatzee" when five or more cartoonists independently make the same gag. And a lot more cartoonists than that, all over the world, had a Mars probe find Osama Bin Laden on the red planet!
The joke may be obvious, but it's still funny. At least once.
A similar Yatzee combined Bush' Mars project and his desire to make O'Neill the first human there, preferrably with a one-way ticket.

Porn universally accepted in the US?
So, how well does the Norwegian media know the United States? Considering that the US (in particular how bad it is) is the most popular topic for Norwegian journalists, it is worth asking the question.
Norway's biggest newspaper VG has visited the porn exhibition Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas, and explains to its readers:
Adult entertainment is universally accepted in the USA and a multi-billion industry. [bold added]
Eh, well, maybe in Vegas, but no.
For the record, hardcore porn is still illegal in Norway, as one of the few countries in Europe, thanks to an alliance between hardcore (heh) Christians and feminists.

Hutton inquiry report to be published on January 28
Lord Hutton's inquiry into the death of weapons expert Dr David Kelly is to be published in parliament on Wednesday January 28. The report will be crucial to the survival of Tony Blair as prime minister of Britain. If the report concludes he has lied, his resignation will probably follow.
However, few expect a devastating report. The tips are that Hutton will slap everybody's fingers a bit, allowing all involved to claim they have been vidicated, but still allowing a few weeks of accusations and debates all around.

.nu not going anywhere soon
With the island nation of Niue all but blown away by a devastating cyclone, many have worried about the existence of the .nu top-level domain, which has been providing the tiny nation with some welcome revenue ("nu" means now in Swedish, so the top level doman has been particularly popular there). In fact, an internet top-level doman is totally independent of the country really existing. Even as countries cease to exist (like the Soviet Union with .su) the domain structure may well remain indefinately.
