Bulk ship capsized off Norwegian coast

Rocknes capiszed

A 25K dwt bulk ship, Rocknes, has capsized just outside Bergen. Its crew of 29 (two Norwegian, rest foreign sailors) fell into the icy cold sea, and a major rescue operation is on. The last I heard 18 is missing and ten people have been taken up from the sea, two of them dead and one seriously injured (don't ask me how this adds up).

The ship lies belly up in the sea, and the rescue staff says they hear sounds from inside the hull. Just now the rescue workers have cut through the ship's hull to get to the survivors. They have established contact with at least one survivor inside.

The weather is fair.

Tight race in Iowa

Senator John KerryToday is the Iowa prim... eh caucus, and we'll finally see some real results indicating who will become the democratic presideitnail nominee. Or will we?  According to this Slate article by William Saletan and Matt Schiller, the Iowa caucus selects candidates in roughly the same way preschoolers usually select football teams, if less organised. We'll get a result, sure, but no pesky paper trail will tell us whether it's the right one.

A few weeks ago it looked like Howard Dean had the victory wrapped up, but now it appears to be a dead heat between Howard Dean, John Edwards, Richard Gephardt and John Kerry (picture). The late momentum appears to belong to Kerry.

It is anybody's guess which way this will go, but it seems to me that as the primaries move south, the voters are likely to prefer Edwards and Kerry. Of course, it is way too early to write off Wesley Clark, who skipped Iowa and concentrates on New Hampshire. It's really a close fight between five candidates, none of whom can be excluded at this stage.

PS: Kerry made a swipe about Edwards' age, and then took it back. Is it a coincidence that the two apparent front-runners are getting a reputation for being nice, after Dean's angry run earlier?

Michael Jackson is guilty!

Famous spoon bender and professional fraudster Uri Geller claims to have interviewed Michael Jackson in a "deep hypnotic trance" and asked if he had ever touched children inapproproatly. The pop star supposedly denied all guilt and proclaimed how "beautiful" it is for a 45 year old man to sleep with the children of strangers. This somehow proves that Jackson is innocent, according to Geller.

Automatically assuming that whatever Uri Geller says is false may be an unusual way to judge someone, but I bet it's safer than most other legal procedures.

Norge Benson the scifi comic hero

Norge Benson scifi comic book hero

Here's 40 scans of classic sci-fi comic book art from the 1940s. I could not help noticing the scans from the comic book series Norge Benson. "A hero named after a refrigerator, that's pretty unusual." There ever was a fridge called "Norge"? Obviously. Well, Norge is also the Norwegian name of Norway!

Fireman's curse

The firefighter and porn star Alexa Jones, who I wrote about a few days back, is probably better known by the nom de guerre Chantel Lace (not very work safe). Just in case you wondered...

Mike Rowe Soft

Canadian teenager Mike Rowe thought it was a cool name for his little part-time business: MikeRoweSoft. Now read that out loud, and you may realise that Microsoft's lawyers are not at all amused. Humour is not a topic at law school.
