A report from Islamist hell

A long, fascinating article about the miserable life under religious extremists in Saudi Arabia.

zipdecode

This interactive Zip code map is way cool. As you type in the digits of a zip code (or remove digits with backspace) you see only the relevant part of the US is lightened up, until you have zoomed down to the one place you are looking for. A perfect visualisation of the Zip code system.

Hat tip to Bruce at no clever name.

Swedish bestiality

Hundreds of animals are sexually abused in Sweden every year, according to the Swedish press. Swedish Radio has been running interviews with several people who have sex with animals.

- I have sex with dogs and horses. It is not as complicated as having sex with humans, "Magnus" tells SR's journalist.

Veterinarians report that they have seen a number of animals with injuries from sexual abuse.

However, there is little to do about it. There is no law against bestiality in Sweden, and the animal protection laws are rarely used against sexual abuse.

Parliamentary Gustav Fridolin tried to pass a law banning bestiality through the Swedish parliament (Riksdagen) last year, but the proposal failed after only six representatives supported it.

Saddam's spider hole to be filled with UN resolutions

From Scrappleface (who makes the news instead of trying to report it):

The U.S. military announced today that it will fill Saddam Hussein's spider hole with reams of paper printed with 12 years of United Nations Security Council resolutions and transcripts from U.N. meetings on what to do about Mr. Hussein's regime. [...]

U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan welcomed the action, saying, "The United Nations has always filled the void in geostrategic diplomacy left by empire-building unilateralists."

A variation on sticking them where the sun don't change.

Spirit under repair

The Mars rover Spirit is sending some diagnostic data to earth, hopefully allowing engineers to finally identify and repair the apparent software fault.

But it was sufficient to tell Nasa that the vehicle's flight software was not behaving properly. It appears that every time Spirit tries to load the software it encounters a problem and then tries to re-boot.

I suddenly realised it is running Windows Me.

Oldest bank robber sentenced

"Red" J.L. Hunter Rountree was caught robbing a bank in 1998, at the age of 87, and given probabtion. Last August, however, he robbed another Texas bank and Friday he was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison. He is 92 years old, most probably the oldest US bankrobber.

In a prison interview with the Orlando Sentinel in 2001, Rountree said he had been a businessman in Texas but had fallen on hard times. He also told the paper that prison food was better than what was served at some nursing homes.

So do you improve nursing home food, or start serving worse food in prisons?
