Pinguin clubbing

Since the weekend is over: Go club some pinguins! How far can you whack that dumb pinguin? I made 320-something once only. Now I can't repeat that feat for the life of me.

Being a Norwegian, I think I'd do better clubbing baby seals than pinguins.

Bush dodges questions, serves ribs

President Bush has become increasingly good at dodging press questions. A recent press conference appearance in Roswell, New Mexico (heh) looks like something from The Onion. It surely shows that his self esteem is at an all time high this election year, or, as others will say, his arrogance.

But ribs are good.

Gates: Spam will be gone

Bill Gates has predicted that the spam plague will be a thing of the past in 2006.

“Two years from now, spam will be solved,” he told a select group of World Economic Forum participants at this Alpine ski resort. “And a lot of progress this year,” he added at the event late Friday, hosted by U.S. talk show host Charlie Rose.

Gates said Microsoft, where he has the title of chief software designer, is working on a solution based on the concept of “proof,” or identifying the sender of the e-mail.

One method involves a human challenge, or requiring the sender of an electronic pitch to solve a puzzle that only a flesh-and-blood person can handle. Another is a so-called “computational puzzle” that a computer sending only a few messages could easily handle, but that would be prohibitively expensive for a mass-mailer.

It is notable that Gates doesn't "promise" the defeat of spam as much as predicting it.

PS: Bill Gates is to receive an honorary knighthood from the Queen. As he's not a Brit, he will not really become Sir Bill Gates, but the press will no doubt call him that anyway.

WHO fears bird flu has mutated

The WHO says that the Asian bird flu may have gone through mutations to become more aggressive and spread more effectively to humans. Still, it appears all humans who have been inflected have received the virus from birds. WHO wants sufferers from bird flu and normal influenza to be kept separate.

Millions of chicken across Asia is being slaughtered to attempt to contain the disease.

WHO now says that its initial estimate for a vaccine was overly optimistic, and there will probably be six months before one is available.

Hey Ya, Charlie Brown

This is a great combination of Outkast's "Hey Ya" and clips from "Peanuts". Have a look (QT, broadband, sound, harmless family entertainment).

Nuts: Spirit landed in Martian junk yard

Now we know why "Spirit" has problems operating. According to this page by the Enterprise Mission (trekkies on acid, apparently), pictures from Mars shows machinery on the Mars surface all around the Mars rover.

Oddly, I only see rocks, but I guess I am too low on mind-altering substances right now to see the obvious.

Opportunity landed

The Mars rover Opportunity, Spirit's twin, has made a successful landing on Mars' surface. Opportunity has touched down on the other side of the planet, on a high altitude plain, and touched down surprisingly softly on the surface.

Spirit is still not back in good health.

Sick

Bah. It's never convenient to get sick, but now the timing was rather bad. Fever, sore throat, aching all over. Oh well.
