Stories from the rich, famous and dysfunctional
"Rod Stewart's daughter Kimberly gave her breast implants to Jack Osbourne when she swapped them for a bigger pair." (Ananova)
How bloody romantic.

He should rather say "charisma of Al Gore" maybe?
I think Bill Maher actually has a point in these remarks on John Kerry's personality:
A personality? All of the Kerry-love is really Bush-hate. Let's be honest. I mean, John Kerry is a noble guy, great service to the country. He's got gravitas.
Then he demonstrated that he really needs to work on those allegories:
But he does have the charisma of the Moviefone man.
It's perhaps not a surprise that I have no clue who "Moviefone man" is. But when I asked around, and even googled for it, I was not much wiser.
I guess it is someone with no more charisma than John Kerry.

The holy grail and other fantasies
Hopefully, most readers understand "The Da Vinci Code" as fiction, but the real conspiracy theories behind it are now rising in popularity. Laura Miller writes an interesting book review, or more of a debunking, of a number of alleged non-fiction books, old and new, that are currently cashing in on the success.
I will always associate the word "Merovingian" with The Matrix, though.

Kids getting fatter
Children's waistlines have been growing by two (British) clothing sizes over the last 20 years, according to one of the first studies into the subject. It has been known for a time that obesity in young people are growing, in the US and Europe alike, but this is supposedly the first study that has looked at waist size:
Their waists have increased by 1.57in [4.45 cm] over two decades, according to a study published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood by a team in Leeds. [...]
Waist size is seen as an important indicator because of the link between abnormal girth in adulthood and increased risk of heart disease. "Those people who tend to put weight on around their waists are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease," said Dr Rudolf.
If you want to look for real problems for the future of humanity, this is it! It's not the number of people that is the problem, it is their size.

The empire strikes back
President Bush has started his reelection campaign in a speech to the Republican Governors Association (clearly friendly territory):
The other party's nomination battle is still playing out. The candidates are an interesting group, with diverse opinions: For tax cuts, and against them. For NAFTA, and against NAFTA. For the Patriot Act, and against the Patriot Act. In favor of liberating Iraq, and opposed to it. And that's just one senator from Massachusetts.
We see the contours of a battle plan already.
PS: Bush had a welcome to governor Schwarzenegger:
The Governor of California is new to politics, so he's still getting used to all the cameras and lights.
