The extremists next door

Asra Q. Nomani reports how extremists took over an American mosque and uses it to propagate Wahhabist extremist hatred.

Sadly, I have learned that the realization of an inclusive Islam is a fragile thing, even in this country. Americans need not look elsewhere to hear hate-filled rhetoric preached by fundamentalists. It resounds in our own back yards.

Which again will breed more intolerance towards all Muslims.

Health care workers sentenced to death in Libya

A Libyan cangaroo court has sentenced five Bulgarian nurses and one Palestinian doctor to death for deliberately infecting around 400 children with AIDS. The case has drawn wide international protests, and experts have denounced the charges as ridiculous conspiracy theories to cover up for bad hygiene. Notably, all the Libyans accused were acquitted.

Bulgaria is outraged and is trying to put pressure on Libya, which currently is trying to seek normalisation with the west.

Gaddafi's regime has not executed anyone for nine years.

Michael Moore Hates America

He hates the truth, too, and it's about time he gets a taste of his own medicine.

Hat tip to Stephen Green.

$104 million for a Picasso

Picasso: Boy With a Pipe

Pablo Picasso's 1905 painting "Boy With a Pipe" sold for an astonishing $104.2 million to an unknown bidder at Sotherby's, becoming the most expensive auctioned painting ever.

The previous owners bought it in 1950 for $30,000.

PS: Just in case you wondered, if the $30K investment had increased in value like everything else, it would have been worth $233K now. So you can safely say it's been an outstanding investment, even though it took 50+ years to cash it in.

Georgia crisis defused

It looked like a showdown destined to end in bloodshed, and ended in Georgia's second rose revolution in six months, as Adzhara's rebel leader Aslan Abashidze fled. A number of the Soviet era dictator's key allies stepped down, once Russia and the United States brought their united pressure on him. President Mikhail Saakashvili is now the leader of a united Georgia.

A very impressive outcome, and one in which all the key players (on and behind the scenes) can be very proud. Well, Abashidze can't, but at least he's alive and his security guarantees remain intact, for the greater good of everybody.

Joke

A woman went into a funeral home to make arrangements for her husband's funeral. She told the director that she wanted her husband to be buried in a dark blue suit. He asked, "Wouldn't it just be easier to bury him in the black suit that he's wearing?" "No," she insisted as she handed him a check to buy a dark blue suit. "It must be blue."When she came back for the wake, she saw her husband in the coffin, and he was wearing a beautiful blue suit. She told the director how much she loved the suit and asked how much it cost. He said, "Actually, it didn't cost anything. The funniest thing happened. As soon as you left, another corpse was brought in wearing a blue suit. I noticed that they were about the same size, and asked the other widow if she would mind if her husband were buried in a black suit. She said that was fine with her, so I switched the heads."
