"The Danger of Americanism"

American culture, ranging from the music to the political ideas, is seen as a threat to the young in Europe:

Americanism is certainly not a spiritual movement, nor is it a worldview that it is possible to oppose at the intellectual level. Its political beneficiaries have tried in recent years to give it, if not a face, at least a program or a goal: "the American Century." It is a collection of empty promises of the type democratic orators have always made — but this time on a world scale. There is nothing in them to excite a reasonable man. But that is exactly the point of Americanism! The key is not what it promises, but what it cannot promise. The key is not what it demands of men, but what gives them. [...]

One should not underestimate the danger of Americanism, or its seductive power. It offers devotion to a culture of nothingness, independence, lack of restraint, a freedom from all obligation, from all honor, from all consideration.

By now you may realise this anti-American text is not of recent origin  It was printed in Das Schwarze Korps, the Nazi SS weekly, on 14 March 1944.

I guess this statement was not really meant as a compliment:

As strange as it may sound, it is the only serious competition to National Socialism's racial worldview in the struggle for the youth, in the struggle for the future of humanity.

And, of course, all through these writings, the Jews are running and controlling America. These days, more sophisticated critics call them "neo-conservatives."

Google apologises for offensive search result

As I have noted earlier, if you google for 'jew,' you get an offensive anti-semitic page on the first page (it used to be #1). Blogs like this had a campaign to push the wikipedia article on 'Jew' to the top, and that was successful. Still, the offensive result is on the front page.

Google has now "paid for" an advertisment on the top of the result page for that search, labeled "offensive search results" and linking to an explanation for the offensive result.

Hat tip to the Google Weblog.

Should we call that 'going phonal'?

Jason Perala of Fargo, North Dakota, was so fed up with mobile Verizon's service, or lack thereof, that he went to a shop and started hurling phones around, causing $2K in damage and some injury to an employee.

Everybody who's had anything to do with a phone company anywhere, anytime, can sympathise, I am sad to say.

Mirror editor sacked after prisoner abuse photos exposed as hoaxes

Daily Mirror's full front page apology

When the British tabloid the Mirror ran pictures of British troops allegedly torturing Iraqis, there were immediate reactions from a number of military experts who thought the photos looked fishy.

Now Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan has been sacked after the newspaper was forced to finally concede the photographs were fakes.

The Queen's Lancashire Regiment (QLR), whose soldiers were accused of prisoner abuse, now feels vindicated, but are returning fire:

Colonel Black, a former regiment commander of the QLR, said the pictures put lives in danger and acted as a "recruiting poster" for al-Qaeda.

Exactly. The newspaper claim it was the victim of a hoax, but a minimum of investigation would have revealed the photos were fake. The newspaper has betrayed its country for money and circulation. Morgan reportedly refused to apologise to the end, and were sacked and escorted from the newspaper building. The newspaper has now apologised "unreservedly," and over the entire front page. However, it still stands by the story about a few British troops abusing prisoners.

This reminds me about Lord Hutton's inquiry into the BBC's claims that Tony Blair had mislead the public about WMD, which ended in a total defeat for the BBC and a vindication for Blair.
