UN SC resolution proposal demands Syria leave Lebanon
A rather surprising alliance has introduced a UN Security Council resolution demanding that Syria withdraws from Lebanon.
The United States and France introduced a Security Council resolution Wednesday demanding that 20,000 Syrian troops "withdraw without delay" from Lebanon and that Syria stop meddling in the country's November elections. It threatens to consider unspecified "additional measures" against Syria to ensure compliance.
It also calls on Lebanon to disband militias like Hezbollah. The resolution meets opposition from Syria and Lebanon, and also a number of Muslims countries.
It's a resolution without teeth, but it is still quite strong.
However, the most important and noteworthy about it is that France and the US introduced it together, as if to say the transatlantic rift is being healed. Lebanon was earlier a French colony.
I wonder if the hostage drama in Iraq, which now appears to move towards a happy resolution, may cause France to rethink its Middle East policies. Nah.
