Arafat II
I hope James Baker is not representing Bush's Middle East policy when he is asking Israel to release mass-murdering terrorist Marwan Barghouti.
During an interview with host Larry King on CNN last night, James. A Baker, the former U.S. secretary of state, who currently serves as the Bush administration's special envoy on Iraqi debt, called on the Israeli government to release Marwan Barghouti, the jailed Palestinian leader who is serving five life sentences in an Israeli jail for ordering attacks against Israel.
Marwan Barghouti is one of the "new guard" Palestinian leaders who organised the so-called Intifada. He was also a founding leader of the ruthless terrorist organisation al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade.
As I wrote earlier, legitmizing terrorists now would be repeating the mistakes of the past. Barghouti may be popular with the Palestinians, and Abbas may well be a dead duck, but bringing in another terrorist-in-charge will just keep the conflict stuck in the old pattern.
Hopefully Baker is not that stupid; he is just making a token request to make it easier for himself to deal with the European and Arab states over Iraqi debt, his real job.
