Eugene Voloch has written a very useful, short list of reasons people blog and read blogs (or don't).

On the early morning of April 9, 1940, neutral Norway was attacked by Nazi-Germany. After years of following a near-pacifist policy, our country was practically defenseless against the onslaught of Hitler's well-trained and well-equipped forces.

The country still put up stiff resistance, indeed it was the country apart from Soviet that were able to resist Germany the longest after first being invaded, but with the major cities taken the defense was hopeless. On June 9, the last Norwegian forces in the country surrendered, and the king and government in exile used our overseas resources, most notably our large merchant fleet, as Norway's main contribution to defeat Nazi Germany.

Norway, except the northernmost regions which were recaptured by Soviet troops, remained occupied until the German capitulation in May 1945.

Today's heroes are Virginia prosecutor Lisa Hicks-Thomas, Loudoun County Circuit Judge Thomas Horne and the jury that sentenced Jeremy Jaynes to nine years in prison for spamming.

Jaynes, 30, who was considered among the top 10 spammers in the world at the time of his arrest, used the Internet to peddle pornography and sham products and services such as a "FedEx refund processor," prosecutors said. Thousands of people fell for his e-mails, and prosecutors said Jaynes' operation grossed up to $750,000 per month.

Jaynes was convicted in November for using false Internet addresses and aliases to send mass e-mail ads through an AOL server in Loudoun County, where America Online is based. Under Virginia law, sending unsolicited bulk e-mail itself is not a crime unless the sender masks his identity.

While prosecutors presented evidence of just 53,000 illegal e-mails, authorities believe Jaynes was responsible for spewing out 10 million e-mails a day. Prosecutors said Jaynes made millions of dollars from the illegal venture.

It may well be a long and thorny appeals process, but I really, really hope this spamming creep will savour every minute of his nine years in prison. He, and others like him, have surely deserved it.
