Edward Morrissey, alias Captain Ed of Captain's Quarters, has written an entertaining WaPo article about conservative infighting over the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.

All you have to do is look at the blogosphere of the right to grasp the magnitude of the bomb the president has dropped. The cyberspace crowd of activists divides up into three basic camps, starting with:

Ed lists the loyalist army, lead by Hugh Hewitt, the rebel alliance, fielding a significant number of angry conservatives, and finally the trench-dwelling dogfaces, where he counts himself.

Those of us who find ourselves torn between the unconvincing, unrelenting positivism of the Loyalists and the potentially destructive Rebel Alliance occupy a no-man's land of political tiptoeing. We spend our blogging time raising our heads out of the foxholes to note the inbound missiles coming from both sides, and wishing the war would stop -- really soon.

It's funny that the conservatives appear to be doing to themselves what the left has failed to accomplish for all this time. It'll be interesting to see if the dems finally are able to capitalise in the midterm elections.

According to those who claim to know, God hates a lot. But maybe you didn't know that God hates figs? Yes, the spelling is right.

The Unofficial Google Blog has revierwed the fresh Google Reader, an RSS aggregator competing directly with Bloglines (and others).

Promising though Google Reader might be, the newly minted service lives down to its Beta status; it is buggy, partly broken, and excruciatingly slow (on its first day, at least). Pretty to look at but impossible to use effectively at the time of this post, Google Reader earns a mixed review.

I'll stick with Bloglines for now, then. Google Reader is, if I know the Google people right, going to be a formidable product given some time.

Yesterday's earthquake in Pakistani Kashmir had a horrible death toll.

A devastating earthquake triggered landslides, toppled an apartment building and flattened villages of mud-brick homes Saturday, killing more than 18,000 people across a mountainous swath touching Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.

The casualty toll from the 7.6-magnitude tremor rose sharply Sunday as rescuers struggled to dig people from the wreckage, their work made more difficult as rain and hail turned dirt and debris into sticky muck. Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan, Pakistan's chief army spokesman, told Pakistan's Geo TV network early Sunday that more than 18,000 had been killed _ 17,000 of them in Pakistani Kashmir, where the quake was centered. Some 41,000 people were injured, he said.

The earthquake was the most powerful in the region for a century. The remoteness of many of the affected areas makes the rescue effort very difficult.

Joe Gandelman has a great and powerful roundup of msm and blogosphere articles about the quake, including links to bloggers who experienced it first-hand.

Creationists can't be too happy about this absolutely brilliant Guinness ad (QT).

Isn't this finally a strong argument for teleology in evolution?

Priya Sani with India Times asks: Wanna advertise, why not try blogs?

Why not indeed.

These networks offer adventurous advertisers the opportunity to target unique and previously unarticulated demographics. Blogs have long served as watering holes for niche influencers and opinion-makers whose loyal and impassioned readers are also smart, savvy consumers, thus being conducive for hyper-targeted marketing.

Savvy, that's praise for you who are reading this.
