A RasmussenReport poll:

In a match-up between the early 2008 frontrunners, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) leads New York Senator Hillary Clinton (D) 52% to 43%. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds Giuliani’s lead growing in recent months. His current nine-point advantage is up from a six point lead in January and a four-point lead in December.

Giuliani has solidified his title as the most popular candidate of Election 2008—his favorability ratings have inched back up to 70%

And in early polls for the 2024 election, Chelsea Clinton has a slight lead over Mary Cheney...

Jokes aside, this is so ridiculously early - 80 weeks or so before the election - that the picture is very likely to change. One week is a long time in politics, a year is an eternity. There will be lots of time for the early frontrunners to slip up. Giuliani is so far known by most voters as the hero mayor of 9-11, but there's so much dirt to dig up from his past that I would actually be surprised if he is even in the race by the time we reach the primaries.

However, this poll may indicate that the coronation of Hillary is also very premature.

Sandmonkey reports on fellow Egyptian blogger Abdel Kareem's harsh sentencing, and the reactions in Egypt.

Egyptian blogger Abdel Kareem Soliman was sentenced to four years in prison yesterday in a Cairo court. He will sit in jail for three years for the crime of “contempt for religion” and one year for “insulting the president”.

For those of you who haven’t been following the case, welcome to the Middle East. They do indeed have crimes like that around here.

Almost as disturbing as the sentence was the public reaction. As the court hearing ended, the media moved to the street in front of the courthouse and started interviewing people about what they thought of the trial. With the exception of human rights activists and bloggers, the Egyptian public seemed satisfied with the verdict, if not disappointed it wasn’t longer.

Many people expressed the view that Abdel Kareem should be killed for what he wrote, and each of them shared their preferred way to kill him: stabbing, hanging, and of course, the classic beheading. One actually asked a lawyer if it was legal to now kill him, since this verdict clearly brands him as an apostate, and the Sharia punishment for an apostasy is death. People were talking about killing him in the most casual manner, as if he was no longer a human being to them.

Very scary. It is difficult to see how freedom of speech can develop in a country where such opinions are commonplace, and I see freedom of speech as a necessary condition for democracy.

Abdel Kareem is not only risking to spend the next four years in an Egyptian jail; being branded an apostate means he carries a very serious risk of being killed there.

An absolutely bizarre accident in Guatemala City:

Hole in Guatemala City.

A giant hole in the ground opened up suddenly in the middle of a densely populated poor district of the city, swallowing several houses and at least one truck.

The hole is said to be more than 100m (330ft) deep. Residents said they had felt the earth shaking and heard loud noises before the houses collapsed.

More than 1,000 homes were evacuated in the area. The national emergency agency said there had not been any casualties.

Officials said the sinkhole had probably been caused by a saturated sewer main.

If nobody was killed, that is quite amazing good news.
