WHO'S YOUR DADDY?

There's a new blog on Salon Blogs called Real Live Preacher which is causing quite a stir. You'd think an Alien had landed and started a Blog, so much is being noted about the writings of this self-professed Texan Preacher. Part of the novelty seems to be he hasn't been Preachy at all, more in the vein of what you'd imagine the Dad on Seventh Heaven would write if he had a Blog.

This may come as a shock but I actually have quite a bit of religious experience, a side effect of having been raised in the South. My Mom isn't particularly religious but my Aunt and Uncle are and I used to go spend summers with them and their four kids and was included in their frequent church activities. I also went to an Episcopalian Prep School and while the Episcopalians aren't exactly Holy Rollers (the joke is wherever you find Four Episcopalians, you'll always find a Fifth. Get it? A Fifth. Little Piscy humor there.), we were required to attend chapel every Wednesday morning. As a result, I know more than I'll ever need to know about the Bible and all the Testaments. I can even quote some Verses off the top of my head which makes a great Party Trick in a group of Soused Queens.

So far he's been a good writer which goes a long way here at SRO. He hasn't gotten to the Good Stuff yet (which in my book means the whole, you know, Gay thing) but it's something to look forward to assuming he makes it through the skepticism he's faced thus far. When and If everyone makes it past whether he's here to try and convert us all (Good Luck on that one) I'm sure we'll be burning (so to speak) to get the Inside Scoop on the whole Religion Thing. Kind of like Behind The Music minus the Overdoses and Groupies but with the Worshipping and Career Ressurections.

He hasn't mentioned what Brand of Christianity he belongs to but he's just started. His living in Texas probably limits the options but no mention yet of Snakes which is a good sign.

Can I get a witness? Amen.

BLOGGY BIRTHDAY TO YOU

Today is the one month birthday of Bloggy, the cartoon I post on SRO every day. I mention this partially because I'm a little stunned I'm still doing it. I know you may not think they're always funny or clever but what daily cartoon is? Often however, they elicit more comments than other things I post so obviously someone is looking.

I started Bloggy not because I've harbored this burning desire to be a cartoonist but because I wanted an on-going feature in SRO. I also wanted to come up with something that was uniquely suited to the medium of Blogging. Bloggy is all computer generated (no actual drawing involved) and unlike most daily cartoons incorporates elements such as photos I find on the web. It's also (for the most part) pretty instantainious which is a distinctly Blogging feature. Often I wake in the morning and have no idea what Bloggy will be about. After a brief spin over current events (or a Mini-Mensa Moment about the visuals Bloggy incorporates) I throw it together and Boom!, it's posted. Regular cartoonists must, I assume, plan their columns far in advance but regular writers for mainstream publications must do the same and, like I said, I wanted something that was inspired by this comparatively new phenomenon of Blogging.

Anyhoo, I've grown rather attached to the little guy (yes, for the record, he is a boy but only in the vaguest sense - he has no particular sexual preference or ambitions). I like to think he's one extension of my own personality in that he has a constant amazement (and sometimes confusion) over the world around him. Also (like myself) he lives in a world unhampered by limits and where the rules of "reality" are pretty flimsy at best. He ultimately harbors little to no malice and in that regard I would say he's my role model.

Happy Birthday Bloggy! You've made your Daddy proud!
