THE MIRACLE IN A BOX
Yes, today is my birthday.
A party seems a little inappropriate given the world news but Polly and I got one in a cardboard box from a Messenger a thousand miles away who Ive only met through SRO and Real Live Preachers site. There were horns and balloons and confetti. There were little paper umbrellas and cocktail cups. There were homemade cookies and handknit presents. There were peanut butter biscuits for Polly. It was a miracle in a box and it grew and grew and grew. It was the best birthday present I may have ever gotten.
It came in the mail three days ago but I saved opening the box till today because I knew it was all I would get. My mother doesnt remember me because of her illness and my sister doesnt call me anymore for whatever reason (she never bothered to tell me). There is not much I can do about that because I have to take care of myself and Polly. Because of things like the miracle in the box, we do fine.
So here in our apartment my little Family of Polly and me ate biscuits and cookies and I wrapped beads around her neck. Tomorrow night my two best friends Ive met at the Dog Park are taking me to dinner. I have created my own Family which is where I want to be. My Family in Texas sent me a party and my Family here will go have sushi and talk and laugh like we do every day.
If youd told me ten years ago I would be celebrating my 44th year, I would have been highly skeptical. Frankly, I never expected to make it to forty. I have beat the odds but still dont know why. Maybe it was to be with my Family and for that I am grateful. Maybe sometimes, the thing which gives us hope is as simple as a party in the mail, a miracle in a box.
