From New York miniskirts to Appalachian mumbleprayers. Things change, everybody.

Former New York retailer popularized miniskirts
Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003 Whitesburg, Ky.

Paul Young, who as the owner of a trendsetting New York boutique during the 1960s was an early promoter of the (sexual content warning) miniskirt, was found dead in his Kentucky apartment. He was 77.

"He was a visionary," said George Simonton, a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and a member of the faculty at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology.

Mr. Young was credited with bringing the mod styles of England's Mary Quant, known as the mother of the miniskirt, to America from swinging London, according to the Web site of JC Penney, where Mr. Young once worked as a buyer.

Mr. Young, who was found dead on Sept. 29, had faded from the fashion scene and for the last five years had been living in Appalachia, where he carried a rosary and prayed as he walked in public.
