As for the band’s recently released album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, I L-O-V-E it. Truly. It's the right mix of alt-country-seventies cheese- Belle and Sebastian understated melancholy- Crazy to think that it almost wasn't released because their record company thought it was a failed album. I wonder how many great works of art never surface for us to experience them.
Regretfully, I missed the film covering the making of the album. I am Trying to Break your Heart follows Jeff Tweedy and company through the doldrums of trying to make innovative music under the aegis of a corporate label. Although I missed the film and I failed in my efforts to obtain Wilco tix for the D.C. show, I was able to obtain them for the show in Philly. More on that next week….
I also missed the re-release of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars when it was playing in D.C. this summer. I won’t have to pout for too long because it looks as though Bowie is going all out for Ziggy’s 30th anniversary and is releasing a double DVD of performances chronicling his metamorphoses from Ziggy to the Thin White Duke to unfortunate grunge rocker to today.
A Disappointed Fan
One question that’s relevant to music, but off the subject – can anyone tell me why the Beck/Flaming Lips tour decided to mercilessly skip scheduling a show in or near Washington, D.C.? Do they have an utter hatred for the city or were they prescient and able to foretell that the city would be caught up in the sniper fear/hysteria? Beck played here in August, but the Flaming Lips have yet to pay a visit since their most recent release.
And some wonder why the south is heart attack central…
Never had I ever set my eyes upon such a cornucopia of fried foods until I moved south and landed in Athens, GA when I was eighteen years old. My ingenuous self had not experienced more than the typical French fries and fried chicken until then. The mountains of country fried steak and fried vegetables - okra, squash, tomatoes (my favorite)- overwhelmed me and sated my appetite. But there comes a point where the frying must stop…and fried Twinkies cross that line. There’s already the speculation that Twinkies don’t disintegrate. They’re more likely to endure nuclear war, sprout legs, and take over the earth. Consume the Twinkie after immersing the otherworldly formation in a deep fryer and you know you’re body’s going to suffer the consequences.
