W. Somerset Maugham. "People ask for criticism, but they only want praise." [Quotes of the Day]
Sadly, I think I fall into this category a bit too frequently. After spending a great deal of time and effort composing an essay, a letter, a short story, etc. (and i find it's the hardest to take with the most personal writing), I don't want to hear that it's a bunch of crap. In retrospect the most blunt criticism is always the most useful, but it helps if the reader offers a bit of positive criticism to offset the negative. Or maybe I should just stop asking for advice from significant others...
Here's a quote from Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway that made me think today:
"She heard the click of the typewriter. It was her life, and, bending her head over the table, she bowed beneath the influence, felt blessed and purified, saying to herself, as she took the pad with the telephone message on it, how moments like this are buds on the tree of life, flowers of darkness they are, she thought, (as if some lovely rose had blossomed for her eyes only);"
