When I was around ten or twelve years old, I learned how to make an egg cream from a book of party tricks that I found on my parents' bookcase. I'm not sure today why it was such a special party trick—I do remember that the author marveled about how it contains neither egg, nor cream. To me, though, it was a big deal—I was making something most people didn't know how to make, something that most people I knew had never heard of. I found it pretty tasty, too.

Though I've been working in New York since November, I've only had an egg cream twice, once when watching a movie at Film Forum, and once with take out from Wolf's. Last week's Times had a recommendation that should help me increase the count.
