John Robb is longing for an induction cooktop. Initially I thought I'd want one, but after following the links I'm not so sure—I don't want to have to replace all of my aluminum cookware. Then again, I do have some cast iron pans, and this model might be handy to use out by the smoker or the grill.

The Gaurdian picks up on chronic wasting disease in Death on the range. I first learned about the disease from Salon.com when they ran Night of the hunter. We tend to get venison from hunters in New Hampshire at least once per season. So far, it doesn't seem to be an issue this far east, but it has me wondering if I'm better off with buying farmed venison from New Zealand.

I haven't seen much coverage in the national media in the US, but the Chronic Wasting Disease Alliance has links to studies, press releases, and more. There I did learn that the State of New Hampshire has proposed rules to prevent the spread of the disease by restricting the importation of potentially infected carcasses. The comment period ended yesterday.

Salon.com has an excerpt from the book Candy and Me: A Love Story: "Black licorice: People either are or aren't. I'm not. But I think it's very classy. "

Courtesy of Florence Fabricant's Food Stuff in this week's time, I think I'll have to place my Toma Bella order. They're a bit pricey, though. Wonder if I can find them at retail somewhere.
