Newspapers Behaving Badly
My hometown newspaper published this editorial yesterday (from their parent company, Scripps Howard) regarding Laura Bush's cancelled poetry symposium. Following the link is what I thought of this.

Editor:
What a nasty slap at politically dissenting poets -- and equally as nasty of the Daily Camera to publish it. (Feb. 1, "Poets Behaving Badly") Scripps Howard takes the opportunity to accuse our literary talents of being "precious and smug." Some of the greatest conscientious objectors in history have been poets and artists. The powers that be are obviously nervous about this development. The pen is mightier than the sword, it has been said. Will the Bad Poets use their literary powers to spark wider anti-war sentiment? No wonder the White House shut them out. Kudos to those who would knock over Laura's little let's-pretend-everything-is-OK symposium to throw an anti-war tantrum. If that's the kind of party it is, who wants to be invited? It shows that the poets have their priorities in perspective, to turn down an opportunity to be rescued from their evidently desperate state of obscurity, if it means not being able to speak out against the atrocious behavior of the First Lady's husband.
