Slaves of the World
... Your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants, brass-fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are ... mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy -- a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation of the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of these United States at this very hour.
Go where you may, search where you will, roam through all the monarchies and despotisms of the Old World, travel through South America, search out every abuse and when you have found the last, lay your facts by the side of the everyday practices of this nation, and you will say with me that, for revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy, America reigns without a rival...
This message was brought to you by Frederick Douglass, from his Independence Day address of 1852. He was really talking about what white America was doing from the black slave's point of view. I removed references to that not because I think it's irrelevant but because I wanted to make a parallel. Today America's slaves are of every color and they live in many other nations of the world, as well as here. This is how the rest of the world sees us, and how we will start seeing our own country soon enough (if we don't already), when the oligarchy has ground all of us, white, black, brown or yellow, down to the level of slavery. Unless we want to rise up and throw off this president and his men.
