Madame Librarian

The White House must be really scared when they resort to sending the First Lady out on an international PR tour. I like the way the New York Post calls a spade a spade -- their headline: "First Lady in Paris to Make Nice." That, and to deflect attention away from all the unfolding Bush administration scandals. "Look at Laura! Our lovely First lady! See how good she is, world? She wants little children to read! These are the values of the Bush administration!" I told you in my last posting what I think of the Republican attitude towards education. Sending Laura out to smile and wave is such an insubstantial response to a bad situation that I think it deserves a petty commentary that's beside the point. See below.

CNN is billing this as "Mrs. Bush's UNFORGETTABLE European Trip!" with perky Soledad O'Brien as the embedded journalist. There is a title screen with soft focus pictures of Herself juxtaposed against a Merkin flag. (I wonder if the White House art directs their graphics.) So there's Laura in Paris, and what's the first thing she does? Get her hand kissed by a French scoundrel -- did he french kiss her hand? I thought it looked like he tried to lick it, but irregardless, it looks like she is really enjoying this -- what kind of behavior is that for a First Lady? Ah, but she likes Bad Boys, more about that, below. Looking every inch the librarian in a Glenn plaid suit that turned a major shade of beige from a distance. Beige and dumpy, with Weimar era styling -- prim little collar, high neckline, trumpet flare skirt. Only a boring old string of pearls for jewelry. In fairness, I suppose she dare not wear the bigass pearls that Mommy Bush used to. But Laura sported not even the omnipresent American flag lapel pin that is so popular among her set. Could it be that even she is embarrassed to be an American? I'm sure this must have been an overlook. Conclusion: At the very least, if a First Lady can't be substantive, she could be fashionable. Laura could take a lesson from Cherie Blair. A little chic is so refreshing. That ascetic tweed suit with no accessories did not make me proud.

Who is this woman? How would we know? She seems like a total stranger, having kept herself out of the spotlight for three whole years. I don't see why she's been so low-profile. I like a good, active, vocal, visible First Lady, of the Hillary or Eleanor variety. Someone to make me proud, who isn't afraid to rock the boat a little bit. Laura Bush is a blank -- a non-controversial nothing. She comes out to read a children's book once in a while. I'm all for education, but I really think Laura can do better than that. What's really interesting is how did this "quiet librarian" get mixed up with this alcoholic studmuffin academic underachiever? Did Laura like Bad Boys? Smart Women, Foolish Choices... She managed to marry an uber Bad Boy, an ultimate white collar criminal. She probably doesn't like it, but maybe she knows too much to get out, now. And she bore the beast's children -- I saw the twins in an episode of E! Channel -- Bad Girls. Evil spawn. She's in over her head, Laura Bush. I'll bet the Dynasty feels it has to maintain control over her at all cost. She obviously has no choice but to live the charade.

Speaking of wives of powerful men, I didn't want to let the opportunity go by to lambaste Lynne Cheney for lashing out against Wesley Clark's right to speak freely. He rightly said the president's foreign policy debacles have embarrassed many Americans, and she wrongly said that he should "be careful how he uses language." This coming from a woman whose husband's lies make him appear to be out of touch with reality... She also keeps under the radar -- if progressive America knew what she was up to they'd have a collective stroke -- the White House must keep Lynne Cheney's radical anti-woman right wing politics under wraps to avoid controversy. Every once in a while she comes out to make some royal pronouncement, presumably from the Undisclosed Location, where I suspect that she may be running a top secret Stepford Wives cloning laboratory.
